19-Year Old Saudi Rape Victim Ordered to Undergo 200 Lashes
Thursday, November 15, 2007

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A 19-year-old female victim of gang rape who initially was ordered to undergo 90 lashes for "being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape," has been sentenced to 200 lashes and six months in jail for telling her story to the news media.

The new verdict was handed down by Saudi Arabia's Higher Judicial Council following a retrial, the Arab News reported.

The court last year sentenced the six heavily-armed men who carried out the attack against the Shiite woman to between one and five years for committing the crime.

But the judges had decided to punish the woman further for "her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media," a court source told the Arab News.

The new verdict issued on Wednesday also toughened the sentences against the six men to between two and nine years in prison.

Saudi Arabia enforces a strict Islamic doctrine that forbids unrelated men and women from associating with each other, bans women from driving and forces them to cover head-to-toe in public.

The case has angered members of Saudi Arabia's Shiite community. The convicted men are Sunni Muslims, the dominant community in the oil-rich Gulf state.

That's probably the point.

I know this sounds weird, but I'd like to get whipped 10 times, just to see what it's like. (And I don't mean foreplay, although I might go for that too. lol)

oh i dont know. sometimes religion can get really stupid. as joseph campbell said, religion gets in the way of true spirituality. while i am not spiritual, i dont want religion to get into my way of thinking, and the way i will deal with other people.

That is crux of the whole matter.

I was raised Agnostic--we weren't told to believe, or disbelieve. My mom taught us to be whatever we wanted, after we did our OWN thinking as teenagers and adults, and come to our own conclusions. So I can't relate to a Saudi woman believing in ANY religion, Muslim or otherwise, so vehemently that they wouldn't rebel against this.

I believe it's that thinking that sets most of us apart from these women--they're told, day in and day out, that the way things are there, are the way things simply MUST be. Most of us aren't really told that. We're allowed to seek and hold freedom, and allowed to stand up for ourselves, and allowed to wear what we want, etc. I'm guilty of this, myself, in saying "well all they have to do is leave," but it wouldn't be simply leaving their home. It's leaving everything they've ever known. Asking someone to give that up isn't always easy. To attain freedom they have to want it so badly that they're willing to leave everything and even die for it. When anything (whether it be religion, punishment, guilt, etc.) shrouds you so much, it isn't that easy.

your mom raised you well.

anyway, yeah, i pretty much have a hard time believing that these women just accept all these things. i mean, they should be aware of women's rights already seeing as the world is so full of it... or are they kept in the dark by the men?

oh well. if im gonna get married to someone, he can only be a liberal minded christian, agnostic, or zen. i close my doors to the rest.

I've never lived there, but I definately think it is most of the men there that do indeed keep them in the dark. If they suddenly said "oh yeah, by the way, we really have no power over you anymore..." then they'd lose all of their say in things. Power-hungry people dont' want to give up their power.

I read a news article that I wish I could find again..it was dealing with women who lived in strict Muslim communities who were raped and went through these same ordeals, or who became pregnant before marriage who have had to run away for fear of being murdered and such. It's really heartbreaking.

i cant stand these things. i wish the mythical amazonian queens went there and fought for the poor women there.

know what else i heard? there was this poor little girl who was suffering from a severe stomach ache. the mother couldnt take her to the hospital as none of them had the robes they use to cover themselves up from head to toe.

i just cant stand it. sometimes i wish ive never read those things. i wish i could just resurrect adolf hitler and tell him to gas all those evil men. theyre so incredibly evil.

That's because we understand what freedom is, and we have it. The simple fact that we wish for change is proof we value it.

Me, you, and HalfBloodPrincess could go there, round up every single woman there, and tell them, no, SHOW THEM, what a better life we lead...maybe a few would come back with us, but most would look at us just as their men would--that we're evil for tempting them to something better, something they don't deserve and that no one should have: total freedom. They're so brainwashed by what they've been told that nothing else matters.

I can say that I'm very thankful to not live in a country like that, but if I was one of those women, I would most likely think that the life I have can never be better, and constantly being the equivalent of a slave is the best I can acheive.

I don't want to sound cynical, but worse things have happened. I definitely do feel bad for this woman, but there are women all over that area that are sentenced to be raped for their husband's crimes (in order to degrade the husband).

Spoiler - pretty explicit, R-rated stuff
Spoiler:

There are women in that area who have their clitoris and labia cut off at infancy, and have their vaginal opening stitched together, with only a small hole for menstrual flow, only to be opened by male force on the wedding night.

Now if you think that's bad, just think about things that the Inquisition did less than 200 years ago.

Our world is a really, really sick place, and we're probably not going to see a significant change in our lifetimes, but I seriously think something needs to be done about parents brainwashing their kids.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm different. I'd do it to see how much pain I can endure.. You'd be shocked if you found out some of the thoughts that went inside my head.

I sometimes think about myself getting dying at school because a murderer comes into the school and I imagine myself dying protecting my friends. I do that a lot, even when I walk into a new room, the first thing I do is look for stratigical places to attack from, or how I would do something.

I have a very vivid and wild imagination.

I don't have as strong of a view as you guys do. I can't reallys explain how I feel about this, but I feel that going in and "showing them the way" wouldn't work quite as well as some of you wish it would. After all, isn't that what the U.S, miitary has been trying to do in many arab nations for years. If the citizens of these countries truly wanted reform, then they would rally for it themselves. We can't "help" people that won't "help" themselves. The truth of the matter is, I don't think that they really beed our help. When they do want our help, I'm sure that they'll let us know.

What do you guys really know about these arab nations, outside of what the media feeds you? Sure, this situation seems unfair, and I am certainly glad that our nation doesn't punish people for the crime of being in the wrong place. I'm just not sure that our ways are the "right" ways, either. After all, just look at this forum. It is a debate-central about current policies and why they should or shouldn't be changed. Every one of you has complained about something that your country is doing in these forums. .

Maybe these arab nations are generally happy with their religion and government. I'm sure that there are things that they wish would change, but there are also people in their country who like the way these things are run. This goes for the men and the women. I know that it's hard to belive, but maybe they are actually happy with their lives. They were raised in a twilight zone compared to us. It also works the other way around. We were raised in a twilight zone compared to them. Maybe they sit there and think, "man, I'm glad that I'm not materialistic like the western world. That is a fate worse than death. They take too much stock in their pride, and they have humility."

Western civilization is not perfect, and eastern civilization prpbably isn't as bad as we are lead to believe.

i think we all agree that western civilization isnt perfect.

i come from an asian country that treats women like scum, but none compares to the way these poor muslim women are treated. i think that the muslim woman was crying out for help, but her government was angry at her for trying to appeal to the public. so there, you see, they do want our help, and they deefinitely need our help, but they just cannot because of their oppressive government.

and yes keb ill gladly march alongside you if it is to protect these women and give them a better life.
