I just got an idea after rereading the third book:

There is this scene in the great hall where the only one's left in the castle are joined together for christmas lunch. Professor Trelawney is delayed and says:

“I dare not, Headmaster! If I join the table, we shall be thirteen! Nothing could be more unlucky! Never forget that when thirteen dine together, the first to rise will be the first to die!”

Short while after that:

Full to bursting with Christmas dinner and still wearing their cracker hats, Harry and Ron got up first from the table and she shrieked loudly.

Wouldn't it have been great if Dumbledore had been the first to leave the table as he is the first to die???

Haha yeah that would be funny, especially since he knew he was going to die.

Edit: Now that I think of it, I don't think he knew he was going to die then, so it would just be ironic.

I think it would've been funny because Trelawney probably just used this phrase to sound interesting and important.

Funny because there would've been another proof for Trelawney's prediction skills. Dumbledore didn't thought much of them at that time.

Snape being the first one to leave the table is nonsense as he died after Dumbledore.

yeah. dumbledore should have stood first.

oh and dont forget. in book 5, while sirius was discussing about the order of the phoenix and he and mrs weasley were having a fight coz mrs weasley thought that harry was too young for such things, there were thirteen people dining in the table.

lupin
sirius
tonks
mr weasley
mrs weasley
harry
ron
hermione
ginny
fred
george
mundungus

and there was someone else... was it moody? i dont know. i lent the book to my friend, hence i cant recall who was the other person there, nor can i remember who was the one who stood up first. i think it was ginny.

but ginny didnt die. i wish those two situations did justice to that superstition, unless of course jkr's point is to discourage us from believing in nonsensical superstition. i hope the fact that there were thirteen dining in a teble did not just simply mean nothing.

Ginny was the first to get up. She was already sitting on teh floor playing with Crookshanks when dinner was over. I think Mad-Eye Moody was there... I'd have to check, though. Oh, or was it Bill?

WOW, there were indeed thirteen people dining together:

lupin, molly, tonks, sirius, arthur, bill, dung, harry, ron, hermione, ginny, fred and george (just checked)

And you're right, Ginny is the only one mentioned not sitting at the table after dinner.
But Molly is the first one to rise, she went for the dessert. Trelawney didn't said anything about dinner has to be finished when the first one stands up. So I guess Molly should've died first.
Pity that Sirius is described to rise from his chair just because he struggles with Molly. So Rowling was inches away from another great foreboding. Without the desert and with leaving out Ginny playing with Crookshanks on the floor, Sirius would've been the first to rise AND the first to die.

Wait... so if Molly was getting dessert... was dinner over? Because technically Ginny was the first one up from the table. But if it has to do with the meal being over... then who is the first to rise after dinner? But Ginny never gets up from off the floor. So really there are only 12 people left at the table from that moment on.

After the main course, Molly went for the dessert. Remember what Trelawney said:

"Never forget that when thirteen dine together, the first to rise will be the first to die!"

So there's nothing about dinner has to be over. That means Molly should've died first.

But one could say, that rising means leaving the table after the whole meal is over. Then Ginny was the first leaving the table.

Ginny is on the floor AFTER the dessert.
Sirius rises right after that during the struggle with Molly.
And Ginny is called off to bed after that.

hmm... either it was something that went unnoticed, or jk was deliberate in that, sending us a message that prophecies dont mean anything unless you choose to act on it. well you cant choose to be killed, but you can choose to fight for your life.
