When Dumbledore was explaining to Harry why he was chosen by Voldemort over Neville, he said that Harry was a half-blood. But both of Harry's parents were wizards, so doesn't that make him a pure-blood?

I thought the classes were -

Muggle-born: both parents were muggles.
Half-blood: one parent was a wizard and one was a muggle.
Pure-blood: both parents were wizards.

So, if Hermione has kids, wouldn't her kids be pure-blood?

thats not true. Blood is based on what they were born as. Example: The Wasleys are Purebloods because they were all raised in the wizarding world. Lily wasn't a pureblood because she was raised as a muggle. Does that help at all?

James was a pure-blood, both his parents were wizards. Lily was a muggle-born because both her parents were muggles.

Pure-Blood + Muggle-Born=Half-Blood

So, Harry and Ginny are both wizards, so are their kids pure-bloods?

And if James was a pure-blood solely based on both his parents being wizards, then how is Harry not a pure-blood also?

Pure-blood must mean something else - a descendant of one of the original wizarding lines with no outside blood ever. Once you are no longer a pure-blood, their is no way to get back to pure-blood status as you'd have muggle blood somewhere in your past.

^ I think that explanation is the correct one. That's the one I've always assumed anyways.

When JK Rowling refers to pure-blood wizarding families.. she refers to the Blacks for example.. who have never had a son/daughter marry a muggle-born wizard... therefore keeping their bloodline "pure".

James is pureblood because his parents were pureblood too. And they were pureblood, because their parents were pureblode. So yes, they come from an original line.

Muggle-born = both Muggle parents.
Pure-blood = both pure-blood parents.
Half-blood = all else aka only one pure blood parent and the other anything but (such as, muggle-born, half-blood, giant etc.)

The way I see it is this:

- Pureblood = both parents (and both sets of grandparents) are purebloods.

- Halfblood = both parents are magical, but a set of grandparents are muggle-born [OR] one parent (and the grandparents from that side of the family) is pureblood + one parent is muggle-born.

- Muggleborn = both parents are non-magical.

Basically, I think if you take grandparents into the mix it's easier to figure out.

a pure blood is one.. whose both set of grandparents and parents are wizards..

though harry's parents were wizards bt one of hiz grand parents'(lily's parents) were muggles..

so consiquently harry is a half blood...

but harry's kids are pure blood... as their grand parents... (mr n mrs weasley n james n lily ) r wizards...

simple... Smile

muggle born = some one who has both muggle parents
halfblood = either a parents who had magical blood and one who was muggle or a pureblood/halfblood with a muggle born witch is why harry is a half blood
pureblood = all of the descendants are wizards or a halfblood with a pureblood

well thats because... harry's kids have both their set of grandparents as wizards.. therefore they r pure bloods..

u need to have both set of ur grand parents..maternal as well as paternal wizards to become a pure blood...

get it..??

I get what your saying, but Harry's kids can't be true pure bloods, the black family and the malfoy family are true pure bloods.

I guess what am trying to say is that people like the malfoys wouldn't see Harry's kids as pure bloods would they because they do have some sort of muggle blood running through their veins, and also the malfoys as a whole despise anything to do with muggles.

You're wrong. Lily wasn't a muggle, she was muggle-born.

^Gin's right. Wikipeda is a good source, and Harry was a half blood because Lily was a muggleborn --meaning her parents were muggles not her, and James being a pureblood.

half-blood(harry) + pureblood (ginny) = halfblood.

pureblood means that all through BOTH parents bloodlines, there are only purebloods.
since harry's mom is muggleborn james, albus, and lily would be halfblood. make sense?
