Here are Dumbledor's first words at Hogwarts:
'"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. and here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!"'
What do you think he meant by "Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!" It could just be nothing but I really didn't know and was just wondering if I missed something. |

Dumbledore just has an off beat British sense of humour, we're partial to our odd outbursts, just like the Twins! _________________ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. |

I think that they may have some meaning that we will find out in the final book. _________________

It was a joke...
As in, you would expect "a few words" to mean a speech, but he uses the phrase to literally mean several (random) words. |

I don't know, now I'm starting to think that maybe they have a meaning of some sort.
Nitwit - Nitwit means someone stupid or when someone does a stupid action, they can be called a Nitwit...Perhaps refering to Quirrel in the first book?
Blubber - Meaning fat or a chunk of fat? It is also what whales have to keep them warm...Blubber...hmmm....refering to norbert the dragon or maybe the giant three headed dog, fluffy?
Oddmeant - I have no idea what this mean...so I can't figure out anything to make sense of it..
Tweak - Tweak...to change slightly or fix slightly...what needed changing in the first book...or any books...?
Maybe...[which is most likely] I'm thinking too deep into these and they could be just rubbish words he said...I also thought he was saying them to magically introduce the food to the tables...because we never really hear the real incantation to summon the foods from the kitchen..and maybe that was it. :S _________________

When i first read that part, i thought that it would probably hav some meaning later in the book or in another book. but then again, i used to always think that nothing was a coincidence in the books and that everything was put in there for a reason. but since JKR admitted in an interview that there was no reason for putting so many sock references in all the books other than for humor, i am forced to believe that some things, such as this, hav no meaning whatsoever, and r just there to make the book more interesting _________________ Bloody Hell!!

I thought the same thing, too. I thought that thse words, along with a lot of other randomness had some prupose. but I think in this case she was just presenting DD's character and showing who he is. He might be brave, and smart, and hard-working and cunning... but he's human. And random. He might, as a headmaster, have been trying to getthe new students to relax by making that his speach. Whatever the reason, those words didn't have any significance like I thought they would. But I'm ok with that. _________________

I always thought he was being funny. Whenever people give a speech they say something like "I'd like to say a few words..." and so Dumbledore said a few words...an odd assortment of funny words...
I thought we were just supposed to gain insight into his personality from that display. _________________

I liked how at the funeral, Harry thought of Dumbledore's idea of a few words and it made him chuckle...because I think that's exactly what Dumbledore would have wanted. _________________

Yea, it's just his crazy sense of humor I think. Dumbledore was kind of weird sometimes _________________

yup, most of the time dumbledore is humorous and funny. thats all it was, humor. but usually he will become very serious. but really, those words dont mean anything important, but they were obviously or probably, at least once, said throughout the series _________________

| LOL come on...you can't see that it's his sense of humor coming out there? This is a device to build up Dumbledore's character as an easy-going guy despite his brilliance and his past. Do you think the "sherbet lemon" in the first chapter that so annoyed Mcgonagall had any significance to the plot? No, it served the same purpose as "nitwit blubber oddment tweak:" introduction of character. If Monty Python did a skit like that would you think "Oh, what's THE HIDDEN MEANING behind that?" It's just comedy is all! |
