He was a Death Eater.. but became a spy..

I mean does he really have to be punished for a mistake he made at like 20..

he's a friend.
he was loyal to dumbledore.
however, the way he treated harry was completely innappropriate.
snape loved harry because he was lily's son, and hated harry because he was james' son.
despite that, he was definately a friend.

That's true.. but most of the reason he treated Harry like that was because he did not want to let voldemort know that he was loyal to Dumbledore..
actually he was loyal to himself but he was more loyal to Dumbledore then to voldemort.

In the overall war against Voldemort, he was an ally. Was he Harry's friend? No. He was a brave but very unfair bigot that grudgingly did some good. He was a complex character that can't be summed up in a single word.

definitely a friend!! he had his crappy moments like for the whole of bk 1-6 but you have to admit, he was damn good at occlumency. do you know how much effort it took to keep his love secret? i think that was the true heroic act. loyal to lily to the end. he was an a**** hole but he redeemed himself with the greatest sacrifice of all, his life.
