Jim Broadbent has announced himself as playing the character of Horace Slughorn, the new Potions Prof. at Hogwarts in an interview in Dark Horizons.

Here is an excerpt from the interview...

Quote:
Question: You must have a comfortable life which is hard to give up unless something comes up you want to do.

Broadbent: Yeah I had basically three months in Lincolnshire in the summer and suddenly now I'm back on the rollercoaster again and I've got to finish off Indiana Jones next month and I've got a bit on Young Victoria and it's all been sort of stacking up and then I'm doing Harry Potter.

Question: Who are you?

Broadbent: Who am I? He's called Horace Slughorn. He's a retired teacher of magic who's drawn back out of retirement because he's got some secrets they need in the battle against the Deatheaters and he's quite star struck as a teacher and he's drawn back into the fold because he likes to notch up celebrity students, and he's drawn back by Harry.

Question: Is he a comic character?

Broadbent: He is quite a comic character, yes. I haven't started yet. I've had endless costume fittings and makeup and ...

Question: What kind of costumes?

Broadbent: Tweedy sort of things with a bit of padding. He's an older man, I'm aging up again.

Question: Have you read the book?

Broadbent: Yep, yep, yep. I haven't read them all but I've read mine.

Slughorn is supposed to be old. He was already a professor when Tom Riddle went to school. He retired. So... yeah, age is pretty good, in my opinion.

Hmm... Forgot about age i still don't like him. And this guy looks like if he would run he'd get exhausted of age rather then being large. Then again i don't like many of the actors.

hmmm.... not really what i imagined... but not very far... i imagined someone with a really huge belly... but well the costumes and makeup will take care of that so that he may look just like what sluggy ought to... his main picture in imdb makes him look like slughorn though.

I really don't think weight should be an issue... they can always use padding. I'd rather them go for a really good actor, than find someone who is already physically perfect. Because they can change how they look, but not how they act.

Dunno if I've actually said it before on the forum but I've thought it- I wish Richard Griffiths hadn't been cast as Uncle Vernon, though he plays the character wonderfully, I think he would have made the perfect Slughorn, personally. But Jim Broadbent will put it off flawlessly, I'm sure.

I wonder if they had known about Slughorn from the beginning of they would have held off casting Richard Griffiths as Vernon and cast him as Slughorn, instead.
I mean, I think he makes a really good Vernon Dursley... and who else would have been better in that part?

Yeah, he is amazing, he does seem to get ignored by people who aren't as familiar with his work.

well of course skill is more important than physical appearance. imelda doesnt really look like dolores umbridge. but i think she did the part well.

but it would be nice if the actors already looked so much like the characters.

It's a past credit because it's already been filmed, just hasn't premiered in theatres yet..

i did imagine Horace slughorn as being a man on the verge of obesity. But if WB is the production company they could come up with something more like a dr. seuss book, nothing against the cat in the hat

Yes, thank you!

When he announced he was laying the part of Slughorn he was just finishing up filming Indiana Jones. I included it into the past credits list to make it easier, just a neat, simple list.
