This has come up so often that I thought it'd be prudent to have a thread focused on examining Ron and Hermione's relationship book by book, chapter by chapter.

If anyone's interested, we'll start in "Philosipher's Stone" (Sorceror's Stone in the States), the chapter "Departure From Platform Nine and Three-Quarters".

I think she came off with a superior attitude, and that turned him off.

But she said it in a rude, holier than thou tone.

As we all know, though, it was due to lack of self-esteem and fear of failure. I don't blame here. I just think that it was the cause of Ron's dislike for her. He can never see something below the surface, and it wasn't until he realized that his opinion of her actually affected hr emotions that he began to see her as a person with insecurities.

At that time they are young not sure how to act to the opposite sex. Ron had one sister and a house full of guys. So hes un-aware of a girls fealings which is what causes her to cry in the bathroom. But this also seems to start the whole relationship roots to me because at that point she becomes the damsel in distress who he saves. If im not making any sence im sorry lol.

I loved when Ron saved her from the troll, even in the first book I loved Ron and Hermione together. I thought it was cute how he found her so annoying at first, but then got to realize that she wasn't really all that bad.

I think the scene on the train isn't shippy, but it does set up Voldemort's taunting of Ron in "DH". Hermione is obviously more interested in knowing Harry than Ron. Probably a sorce of a lot of his nerves.

Yeah that was the first time he felt overshadowed by Harry. She started out on the wrong foot with him. I wonder if deep down he liked her from the start or if it was just his gryffindor sense of chivalry that made him go save her. I mean he must have been thinking about her...well not must but probably because Harry didn't even realize she was in there.

He was the one who made her cry, and that was the first time that I think he realized that she had feelings. Of couse he was thinking about it; he felt bad for makingher cry.

for me i always thought that it started really started in CoS or towards the end of the SS. Like when he was the chess peice. And about the whole troll part, it wasnt just Ron who went to go and save her it was harry too. However I think that was the turning point where Ron and Hermione were willing to be civil with eachother and become friends.

^ Right but the fact that Ron uses the same charm that he had gotten into the fight with Hermione about was absolutely fantastic. He was able to perform it properly because he paid attention to her and realized she was only trying to help him.

I dunno bout a set event when he starts having those feelings for her, but I mean so long of them being together as friends I think it was just a gradual thing but then seeing her with another guy made him mad which brought him to realize that his feeling had changed along the way

I agree, I think it was more of a gradual thing as opposed to one specific momet. Perhaps a series of moments, but not one absolute thing.

I agree with mags about it being gradual... i think that the earliest his love for hermione would show up would be CoS... SS they were little... still diapers ok... but i think it would be more likely be PoA... he would be at the age that his hormones kicked in,.

I lent my copy of the first book to my mom, so I can't exactly look back on info. I can't remember any big moments in the chapters "The Sorting Hat", "The Potions Master", or "The Midnight Duel", can any of you?

"Halloween"
This gives us some hints. Hermione cries when Ron makes fun of her, and Ron doesn't argue when Harry insists on saving Hermione. And Ron and Hermione start their rocky friendship.

If no one's got anything else, I guess we can move on to "Quittich" and "The Mirror or Erised".

it a shame hermione never got to see the mirror of erised (sorry bout spelling). it would of been interesting, and we would of found out more about hermoine at an earlier stage.
We found out lots about ron, because he is apart of a wizarding family. and often when ron was explaining things to harry, he would refer back to his family for examples.
everyone knows about harry because his famous.
but it was over a course of a few books untill we got to fully understand hermione.

Well it is a gradual thing. But we all must remember it was Harry who remembered Hermione not Ron. I think that kinda hit us as he knows her but thir friendship and relasionship is only just begining. Ron eventually grows to love her, but ya the first kinda pushy Hermione stunned him. (stunned all of us I bet)And he didn't like her but found the Hermione on the inside. But she does grows out of the small pushy kid and he grows out of being a tiny wierdo. And then they click and fall in love! Its that easy. Very Happy

Gave up on this thread for a while, but I'm going to try and bring it back.

Something interesting is that, when Hermione is gone, Ron acts as the voice of reason. He keeps telling Harry not to look for the mirror (something Hermione scolds him for later).
