I'm not sure, but I figure it is because avatars and pictures in signatures use up a lot of bandwidth, and bandwidth is pretty expensive. Keeping pictures smaller saves money. _________________

Yep. Running this whole thing costs money. If we were to use bigger avatars it'd cost even more money. Keeping them small helps keep the forum free. _________________

But by paying for it it gets it's own domain name [potterforums.com], and probably quite a few other benefits as well. _________________

DarMonkey sets up the controls for the forums. So he can make it bigger/smaller if he wants. _________________

Wow, that's a lot of discussion on the topic. To answer the original question, the real answer is avatars larger than 80x80 can cause the forums to display poorly. Larger images would cause the left hand column to be expanded vertically and horizonally. This leaves less room for the forum text, as well as requiring more vertical scrolling.
As for bandwidth, nowadays the cost is insignificant. This website is hosted on my dedicated server. I run a small business that offers web design and hosting. Therefore, bandwidth is not an issue. _________________
