I'm sure JK just needed to give us something to think about while she writes the next book. I think it would be funny if RAB was only mentioned like once... then everyone would be like WTF?

I think it's R.A.B. I can't think of anyone else. The fact that he's a former Death Eater adds weight to the theory. Even if Voldemort didn't kill him personally, he could just order his Death Eaters to do so. He could make it appear that Regulus was not loyal.

I don't think it is as simple as Regulus Black...I don't think JKR would hav made it that simple to figure out...Do you remember in HPCOS Voldemort jumbled up his name "Tom Marvolo Riddle" to get "I am Lord Voldemort"? I think it will be sumthin like that..But R.A.B doesnt necessarily hav to be a name..Can't it be a message or a puzzle?

I like that idea, but that makes it harder to check off the names (I know that that is the point that you are trying to make). I think for that to work, we would need all the characters middle names as well. I am sticking with Regulus Black.

i think RAB is some sort of nickname like snape calling himself the half blood prince. Or maybe it was a womens maden name before she got married. That seems a little bit of a stretch but you never know.
