What happened to him, did the spell he tried on Harry bounce back and kill him? The movies make me feel like he was just stumped and moved on but that doesn't explain why he ended up in the back of that one dude's head.

His body was destroyed and was remained of his soul was torn from it...
He was weak and incorporial...he fled to a forest in Albania...where he survived by possessing animals, mostly snakes....but they weren't strong enough to sustain him and all died too quickly. Quirrel was traveling there and came acrossed him and he convinced Quirrel to share his body with him.

I'm pretty sure that is all explained at the end of the book...

The movies leave so much stuff out that I can't imagine how people who haven't read the books can really understand what's going on in the movies.
