who would win? Dumbledore was said to be the only one Voldemort ever feared, but that isn't to say he feared him because Dumbledore was more powerful. I believe he feared him because Dumbledore was his equal, and that being the case, he was the only one good enough to potentially kill Voldemort in a fight.
I am led to wonder who would win if they had dueled it out to the death, no holding back from either of them, or if it would just end in a rip in space and time from so much awesome being in one place at one time. (Similar to the Chuck Norris-Jack Bauer paradox) _________________

I'd say they'd both be equaly matched. But voldermort has a higher chance of winning because of his evil and he doesnt have a second thought when he uses a killing curse. But dumbledore is quite caring so he might "hesitate" to kill even voldermort. _________________ "My Logic is Never without Reason..."
Perhaps, but you gotta remember that Dumbledore was a genius, he pioneered his own spells. He probably had his own tricks up his sleeve. _________________
I think it's important to acknowledge that Dumbledore always KNEW that it would be Harry's task to fight Voldemort at the end. However, if you're just speaking hypothetically, my short answer would be a likely draw.
Now here's my long answer. Dumbledore would be using a lot of wacky spells to throw Voldemort's relentless attacking (no doubt his fear of Dumbledore would drive him on the offensive) off balance. Of course, Dumbledore would be more concerned with shielding others (i.e. students) from harm than actually defeating Voldemort. I think any hypothetical considering their duel should also consider that Dumbledore would be in possession of the Elder Wand at the time and therefore I would see no way for him to be defeated. Dumbledore could also not kill Voldemort because of the Horcruxes, only send him away damaged and defeated. This is the second most likely result, which is what Voldemort feared, and the reason he never dared to openly attack Dumbledore himself.
If both characters dueled full out to the death there's no way Dumbledore would win. The problem is Dumbledore is too good to use some of the curses Voldemort would use. He wouldn't bring himself down to that level, so he'd retain his honor, but he would die.
books 1-5 (if voldy was in his body in all of them) id give it to dumbly.. in books 6-7 (if he was alive in 7) id give to voldy as dumbly was very weak from the ring

Voldemort feared him for a reason, and I dont think it was just because of the fact that Dumbledore was the first wizard he met. Of course, that is why Dumbledore had to die, he WAS better than Voldemort, which would have made the last book much different.

I agree with this answer. However, I'm not sure if LV knew DD had the Elder Wand. I was under the impression that LV had to go to a couple people (the two wand makers) before realizing that DD had the Elder Wand. And it was due to LV's ignorance that he didn't realize Harry had won the Elder Wand's allegiance. DD knew about the prophecy, and did some guess work on Horcruxes, and its possible this was the reason he knew he couldn't be the one that killed LV. _________________ Harry + Ginny
I believe everyone claiming that DD would lose because he would not use Dark Spells against Voldemort are way off. Yes DD is good, but he is also not stupid. Voldemort is beyond remorse and the longer he remains alive, the more of a chance there is for innocents to die.
I think that they would be equally matched. The two big difference are that DD has experience whereas Voldemort is younger. I think it would simply be a close fight, where whoever got slightly luckier would win.
The Elder Wand's good and all, but when Grindelwald was defeated by Dumbledore, the loser was in possession of the best wand. But it's still an advantage, and in this match, the contestants would need every advantage they could get. Does anyone else think that Voldemort could just produce a couple hundred snakes, tell them to attack DD, and just overwhelm him? Either a snake's gonna get through or Dumbledore is going to get distracted, right? _________________ "If you're going through hell, keep going."

Uhh...What?
Anyway, knowledge wise, I would say Dumbledore. Power wise, I would say Voldemort.
ONLY, because Dumbledore is so old, and as we all know his Duel against Voldemort weakened him, so if Dumbledore was the same age as Voldemort, or vice versa, Dumbledore hands down. _________________ Follow, please follow me home

I personally think Dumbedore was more powerful.. but he's getting old so maybe now voldemort has more power.. _________________

we dont really know the circumstances at the battle between dd and grindelwald.. grindelwald might have been disarmed at the beginning of the fight, and the elder wand wouldnt have been much help. _________________ "Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that and idiot like that ever became a professor." I don't think that Dumbledore could have killed Voldemort - not because he didn't want to, but because it would've been impossible.
Just as Lily called upon an ancient magic when she gave her life for Harry, I believe that Voldemort called upon an ancient magic when he 1) believed the prophesy and 2) acted upon the prophesy by marking Harry. I think he would've been protected from other people just as Harry was protected from him. Voldemort wouldn't realize this because he was overconfident when it came to his own powers.
This would explain why Dumbledore never attemted to search out Voldemort and kill him. Remember, he wanted to spare Harry as much pain as possible, so I assume he would've killed Voldemort if he could've. After all, they did duel outright at the Ministry.
you would have though with how smart DD was he would have found the wand no problem with all the other Deathly Hallows and been able to use them wisely.
what i want to know is, who is voldemort more afraid of?
of course they say he was afraid of dumbledore. probably coz dumbledore is his equal and has the potential to kill him. however, the prophecy stated that harry potter has the power to vanquish the dark lord. nothing was made about dumbledore defeating him. likewise, he is quite aware that dumbledore wouldnt dream of killing him, and he thinks that only his dark spells can destroy a person, not the dumbledorian spells. _________________

Yes but.. Voldemort never herd the full prophecy. He thought he could just simply kill the boy. Instead he marked him as his equal. He created his own enemy. He always thought Harry to be a child and something he could get rid of easily. I don't think he actually started to fear him until he noticed the Hufflepuff cup went missing. _________________ Peace is a lie. There is only passion.

i dont know, but he knew of the existence of the prophecy. and he could never kill harry, he must have noticed. he's had many failed attempts. when he failed to kill harry when the boy was a year old, he should have started fearing that perhaps the prophecy has its merits. and he should have realized even more
