Just finished reading Deathly Hallows and was expecting some explanation of the veiled archway in the Department of Mysteries through which Sirius fell when he was killed ... but there was no explanation. Confused

So, what exactly was the veiled archway with its mysterious voices? Question

it's like a literary metaphor for the line between life and death, except it actually is the line between life and death.

Line betwen life and death so that's why you can hear voices.

I guess, but I've always wondered WHAT exactly is behind it. Is it a black hole? Space? It can't be anything too painful, judging by what Sirius says in the seventh book (I'm not going to ruin it for those of you who haven't read it), but WHAT THE F Shocked Shocked Shocked IS IT?

haven't you ever heard that "the veil is thin on halloween night" or stuff like that? its the veil separating life from death. I imagine it is how the Unspeakables study it, I wonder if they can go in and out of death, or just poke at it...

that would be a good story... a death eater is an unspeakable and knows how to revive the dead from studying the veil and attempts to bring voldemort back to more or something... ?

that would make an interesting fanfic. Just as long as nobody actually publishes a book about it lol. hehe it reminds me of the Mummy...well they did have all the death eaters in movie 5 fly around like sand.

According to JKs website it is the link between the two worlds (life and death) and it is in the department of mysteries because they are experimenting with it.

So do you think you could throw objects into it? And what if harry had thrown that mirror thing in with it, could he speak to sirius beyond the grave? Where did they find the veil thing, it couldn't have always been in the ministry. I don't understand why sitrius' body had to go as well it should be that his soul departed and his body stayed in this world (just going along with the theme of the books.) Lol so many questions!!!!!

Why would you experiment with the line between life and death?
