Didn't Harry and Dumbledore have a discussion about Tom getting sorted?
I thought I remember Dumbledore saying he was sorted into Slytherin before the hat even touched him.

Actually, it was never decided that Harry was going to kill him.
LV made Harry his equal, Harry wasn't destined to until LV tried to kill him.
The Sorting Hat had no way of knowing that the prophecy was going to be made.

Actually it was decided Harry was going to be the one to go against LV when J.K. Rowling started writing Harry Potter and made Harry Potter the main character of Harry Potter.
The Sorting Hat is a cosmic being that transcends all human and extraterrestrial logic and is all knowing. It can see into the future, past, and present by using it's seducer sleeping technique. All is revealed in page 697 of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.
