Hi there!
I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I'm new to this forum, so here are a couple of my thoughts/theories regarding Snape and Lily Potter:

> Snape had more than a crush on Lily.
> I think he might have shared his old Potions Book with Lily (that one that Harry used in HBP), which is why she was amazing at Potions - Slughorn mentioned more than once how Harry's Potion skills were reminescent of Lily's
> In sharing the Potions book, Snape might also have shared the "Levicorpus" curse with Lily, who in turn let it slip/shared it with James. James then used it on Snape (as seen in Snape's worst memory), and this contributed to why it was Snape's worst memory - his own curse used against him.
> Despite the worst memory, etc, Snape's emotional connection with Lily (and, I think, Lily's soft spot for Snape) is what brought Snape back from the Dark Side and keeps him there.

Thoughts?

wow that was the most wonderful theory but i just have one objection...when u said snape shared his book with lily, dont u remeber in snapes worst memory that it said when Lily tried to help snape he called her a filthy mudblood and he said he doesnt need her help?....well obviousley snape likes lily but never would actually do anythign about it because shes not a pure blood...so if he didnt even want a mudblood touch him how would he be friends with one, much less help one (by helping her in potions)...

tell me what you think

I finished re-reading OTP and you're right, there is the part where Snape says he doesn't need help from a mudblood, etc. However, I do still believe that he had a crush on Lily, and was just that much more frustrated at himself - for having a crush on a mudblood. Just a theory/guess, because I can't really think of any other reason why Snape could have convinced Dumbledore that he was on the good side. You know Dumbledore's whole theory about the power of Love...

Even if Snape had a crush on Lily he couldn't alow himself to admit it. I mean, don't you think that the other Sly's would kill him if he told them that he was in love with a "mudblood"...
He probably acted this way to make sure nobody knew...

I agree, I think that if he had a crush, he would have tried to supress it from himself and others. That might be the reason why he lashes out and calls Lily a mudblood, etc. Its funny that not once to my recollection has he ever badmouthed Lily to Harry. Only James, and how arrogant he was. You'd think that if he truly hated mudbloods, he would have mocked Harry about Lily as well.

I never noticed this 'Lily and Snape' connection. Interesting indeed.

I see it now. No wonder he's always so hostile towards Harry. Lily obviously didn't feel the same way towards Snape.

Might even explain why Snape really hated James.

Exactly, and James saving Snape made Snape think that Lily saw James as a hero after that and him as a weak person who brought himself into danger...

Could it be the reason that Snape hates wizards/withes of muggle birth? what do you think?

Yes, I do agree that Snape resents Muggle-borns because of his repressed feelings for Lily.

Just a couple of more things I thought about regarding a possible connection between Lily and Snape:
> Lupin tells Harry in OTP that Lily didn't start dating James until their 7th year. The bit about Snape's worst memory happened at the end of their 5th year, so what happened in year 6? Who dated whom?
> Harry is always being told how forgiving Lily was, and how she always tried to see the best in people. We've heard about it so many times that I wonder if it is setting us up for something surprising - like her being able to forgive Snape and see the good in him.
> We've been told that we're going to learn something REALLY big about Lily in book 7. I'm assuming it'll have something to do with what she did after school, and how exactly her and James "thrice defied" voldy, but what if it had something to do with the Lily/Snape connection
> Random thought while re-reading the bit about Snape's worst memory - what if the thing that tortures him most about the memory is he called her a mudblood?

That's something to think about. What if James didn't like Snape because he knew Snape liked Lilly?

levicorpus could have already been a spell and Snape just wrote it down as a quick note

Doesn't he say something in book 6 when he's fighting Harry about Harry using his own spells against him?
