I've read the books (as most of us here have) so I know everything that's going on that isn't included in the movie, but do you think people who dont read the books completely understand the plot of the movies? I mean, the filmmakers leave out fillers that sometimes turn out to be pretty important details in the bigger scheme of things.

My one friend loves the movies and absolutely loves Harry Potter but has never read a single page of any of the books! (her loss) I don't even know how she can begin to understand the complexity of all the events and the significance of certain characters. It's going to be a pretty big task for the filmmakers to include all of the details that will tie the story together for non-readers in the last two films. We'll see how they pull it off, I guess.

Any thoughts on this? maybe by someone who hasn't read the books?

I am constantly explaining to friends and family the plot to Harry Potter, after they have seen the movies. None of them understand a damn thing, let alone the complexities that are completely left out.

After seeing GoF one o my friends asked "Why doesn't Voldemort just follow Harry out of that dimension." The same friend also said, "They're wizards, why don't they just kill the bad guy?"

Other popular questions and comments...

"How come Voldemort can't kill Harry?"
Well gee, it took us 7 books to find out... you can wait for the rest of the effing movies!

After seeing GoF: "OMIGOD, Harry and Cho better get together, they'll be so cute!"

After seeing CoS: "Why was Hermione all stiff like that?"

Also, the movies never discuss the differences between the Houses.

I also despised the way the DA and the Inquisitional Squad was portrayed in the film. The concept of House unity was lost in the film... and when Umbridge seperated the students from kissing and fixed their uniforms I rolled my eyes. In the book she was much worse, she took away their civil liberties... but all of that was lost in the film I really felt they the film makers were making a mockery of what was supposed to be very significant. I really feel that by not reading the books the whole essence of Harry Potter is lost on the movie goers.

That's what we got for having a new screenwriter and director. At least Kloves is coming back. He's not too bad.

i actually thought that while watching OotP, because i saw it with my then boyfriend who hadn't read the books. i think that it might just get worse as the movies go on...i know it's difficult but can't they see they NEED to include "small" things? such as ron and hermione being made prefects?

I definitely agree. The film leaves out a lot of rather important things that had happened in the book. However, one big plus is that things tend to be funnier in the films than they appear in the book, at least for me. This is probably due to facial gestures, the way words are said, etc, and I don't think I've never not laughed in a Harry Potter film. Definitely a plus. But aside from that, if someone enjoys the films, that person should read the book. There's so much things left unsaid/undone in the films and it's not like the books are a hard read or anything.

Unfortunately some people are lazy, or they think that since some of the later books are so long, they'll be difficult to read. (which is definately untrue) People who watch the movies and don't read the books just have no idea on what their missing.
