wasnt that what harry told dobby in COS when he gave him the sock which was disguised in lucius malfoy's diary?
well... dobby did save his life in DH... so dobby didnt follow what harry told him to do...
nothing... its just a thought...

ya he did tell him that - and dobby then disobayed Harry Potter.
But unfortunattly Dobby died before he got a chance to bang his head against a rock or a tree or something

dobby was a free elf. and also he was not exactly following orders... he went cos aberforth asked him to... harry was his friend obviously he'd try and save him...

Dobby was a free elf as previously mentioned. I think he would be able to do as he pleased.
But I think the way Harry said it was said jokingly. I think he meant that he didn't want Dobby to try those ridiculous stunts (like the Bludger and Platform 9 3/4). Plus, I don't think Harry objected to Dobby saving them that time, as he was grateful that he did.

He was more than greatful, he gave him a funural that no house elf could have dreamed for.
But I must concure with "flyingace24" I would also believe that Harry was partially joking (getting smacked by a bludger and being able to apperate away from danger are two completely different things)

I think harry said it more jokingly than anything.
Hmmm it does make for some interesting foreshadowing...
By Harry making Dobby promise that... it was foreshadowing the time when Harry would need Dobby to save his life. Get it?

But Dobby always took everything so seriously (he broke Harry's arm for crying out loud so that he would go home, made him drive a car to Hogworts, etc) How come he wouldn't take this just as seriously...?

harry asked for help.
so even though he told dobby never to save his life again, it would be a new request from harry to help him. and dobby was a free elf to do as he pleased. |

OMG . . . that part of CoS was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the death of Dobby. I just couldn't stop crying at that part. It was one of only two parts that I had to put the book down and cry for.

yeah that was a sad part... i was close to tears... well no tears dropped... so i cant count that as crying... i only cried with kreacher's tale coz i was so touched at the gesture of regulus and i could imagine how much kreacher loved "Master Regulus"

In all sence of the word, he does take orders from Harry Potter, because Harry asks him to do things, and he does them - the thing is I think he would even do bad things if Harry told him to.
It's just how much he admires, and believes in Harry.

Dobby's death is not a laughing matter, not in the least bit. Dobby died the most noble way that any other character died, comparable to Dumbledore himself. He put his life in danger to save the others, now how would you like it if you did that and then someone made fun of you?

I would hope someone could find humor in my death - seriously I would. Dobby led a full life, and he died doing what he thought was right. That doesn't stop the fact that he had a (rather funny) habit of trying to do bodly harm to himself even after he'd been freed.
But for the record I thought Dobby's sacrifice had been noble and that if Harry had been a half second quicker Dobby would still be around.
And if it makes you happy: *Raises Glass, and Drains it* To Dobby!

I think when Harry said "Don't ever try to save my life again.", he meant not by means of bludgers, closing the gate, and making Aunt Petunia's pudding levatate so as to get Harry expelled.
