it is that that we will learn more about lily in the next book.
your question will most likely be answered in it.

i am also kind of curious.
the books have said many times that harry has lily's eyes, but why does that matter so much? after all, it is only an eye color.
but anything jkr mentions twice is usually something important.
but what?

As I said; he might see the wizarding world through Lily's eyes... (a.k.a. like she did).
And since Lily was friendly towards everyone:

Maybe it's just seen as a connection to his parents.
Something that they can remember them by.
