I thought the answer to your question was pretty much common knowledge, we find out in the Order of the Phoenix that Voldemort learned of a prophecy from Snape that told of a child (born in the month of may?) who will have the power to dethrone the Dark Lord...I think it was either Harry or Neville?
Anyways, when Voldemort heard of the prophecy he went to find the child and chose to kill Harry first, which backfired...Lily's sacrifice created an unbreakable protection for Harry which caused the Killing Curse to rebound on to Voldemort
