Since Harry got the Invisibility Cloak by being passed down from generation to generation and Riddle obtained the ring (which held the resurrection stone) by taking it from his Uncle, and these two items once belonged to brothers... Putting two and two together, does this mean Harry and Voldemort are distantly related? I thought this might have been mentioned in previous books but can't remember. Enlighten me if you can, please.

YES! I realized that too, but wondered if I had missed some part because I never heard mention of it, meaning harry himself never realized it? how could that be...

ok...this happened a LOOOOONG time ago. so any relation they have is extremely diluted by time, to the point of them not really being related. they'd be like 700th cousins 500 times removed or something like that.

That seems right, it seems all wizarding family trees are intertwined.

How does that work?

The only way Marvolo Gaunt, and thereby Tom Riddle, descendent of Salazar Slytherin, cannot be blood-descended from a Peverell is if the stone was cross-inherited by a legal will or "untimely death," stolen, or otherwise obtained outside of ancestral transfer.

If it was handed down from one generation to the next, parent to child, then Voldemort *must* be descended from a Peverell. Just because my grandmother's maiden name is not my mother's maiden name, nor my own surname doesn't make me NOT blood-related to my grandmother.

I was under the impression that they were distantly related, and that that fact was mentioned in the book. Maybe I just imagined it though? I'm going to start reading it again soon, more slowly this time.

I think we can assume that the Peverell brothers were the wizarding worlds Adam and Eve.

Well all pureblood families are related somehow. And it's not stated, but maybe the brothers lived before the time of the Hogwarts founders and Salazar Slytherin is a descendant of the second brother. Farfetched, i know.

My take was that they're distantly related... but that isn't too surprising when it seems that all pure-bloods have some kind of shared blood some way back. (Harry and Riddle were half blood, but James was pureblood as was Merope.)
