Found it very interesting that lily and james died in 1981 and thus telling us that the book ending happened in 1998 just wondering what everyones thoughts are on why JKR did this, why not base it and say they died in 1986 and have the story end in present day. I just thought it interesing i wish i could ask her why.

I think I might be confused about your question, but I'm going to answer it anway....

Because present day (as we know it) didn't exist when she started writing the books. She started writing them back in the early 90's. That when she wanted to books to take place. Harry starts Hogwarts in 1991, at the same time she started writing them. To her, they were taking place at present time. If Harry started Hogwarts on 2001, well, 2001 was 10 years away. She'd be writing a sci-fi book about a futuristic wizard.

The books started in 1991. They take place over 7 years.

I think she thought (and I think she was right) that it may have been easier to write more in the past as not to get caught with all modern events if you know what I mean.
Otherwise it would be like the book is set in a different world (no comment)

Didn't she start around 1998? So I guess it was present day at the time.

No, she began writing her story in 1991. (Which is when Harry starts Hogwarts). The book got published in 1998.

I agree with this aswell as the fact that in her mind Harry started when she began writing.
If it was current day it would go on around 9//11 and other crap like that, I think she talked about that in an interview with mugglenet.

At first I thought it was weird but it does make sense that she would write them based on her present day. I mean does the time really matter?? I think they are timeless. They don't use many modern conventions anyway. Has anyone else noticed that it wouldn't be as great if they used cellphones and computers to do research??

Yer they don't really like anything functioning in an unobvious way. I wouldn't be surprised if there toilets flushed magically.
