You are My Sunshine
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray...
Remus hummed the last words to the song while holding his newborn son, Teddy. Slowly, he rocked the baby gently in his arms and stared into his sweet face.
He knew the time would come one of these days, but never expected it to be so soon. He had mentally prepared himself for so long that when the news finally arrived this evening, he was all prepared. Remus had made up his mind when the time came he would be going into the battle all alone without Tonks. When Arthur finally delivered the news to him that Hogwarts was being invaded, Remus kept it to himself.
So tonight, he sneaked out of the bed and he got dressed quickly in his traveling robe without waking her. He casted a sleeping charm over Tonks in hopes it would keep her keep asleep until things were settled over at Hogwarts. He knew she would be to stubborn to stay behind if she knew there was a battle happening. This was the only way he could keep her safe. He kissed her softly on the forehead, and whispered to her, "I love you." She responded by rolling over to her side, and drifting off into a sound sleep while he crept out the door.
Then he went to visit his son. When he found Teddy, he was crying in his crib. Remus picked him up and took him to the rocking chair which became their little favourite spot over the past months. He sang Teddy the one song his mother used to sing to him when he was younger to calm him down. When Teddy finally quiet down, he stared up at Remus with curious chestnut brown eyes.
Remus never wanted a child because he knew the child will inherit his curse of being a werewolf. When he found out that Tonks was pregnant, he wanted to run from the situation by offering his services to Harry Potter. It was the fear of being a father that got the better of him. But when his son was born and the first look into his chestnut brown eyes, he truly loved him. He ran around like a madman yelling, "It's a boy, it's a boy. I have a son. I have son!"
He would never forget what it felt like to hold his son in his arms the first time. He felt that fear he had been holding on for so long disappearing from him. He reached out, not believing this boy in his arms was real, to stroke Teddy's cheeks softly. "Hey there, I'm your dad," he whispered, inhaling his sweet scent of caramel. That word felt strange to him even then. He was a father, and someone depended on him. His son's five perfect little fingers wrapped around his own pinky as a greeting. Remus smiled at the gesture. Perhaps, he would be a good father.
Before he knew it, his son became his whole world. His son was his sunshine during the bleak full moon nights he spent in isolation.
Remus smiled at his newborn son, "how did I get so lucky?" He whispered into the silent room. He tried to hold onto every details of his son - his eyes, his tiny button nose, and his lock of brown hair. All which he would be transforming when he get older just like his mum. "You are going to be a little lady man, aren't you?" He chuckled softly at that remark.
Teddy wiggled a bit in his arms at this joke. "Mum is going to have her handful with you," Remus smiled at that thought. "But just between you and me, I don't think that is such a bad thing for your mother because you will be good to her." He found himself thinking of Tonks. "Promise me Teddy that you would love her as much as I do. " He whispered closely to his son. He knew Tonks would be alright. She is a survivor, he thought.
At that moment, he wished for nothing more than wanting to see his son grow up - attending Hogwarts, finding those lifelong friends, and falling in love
"Am I selfish?" He found himself asking that question out loud. He thought about James, Lily, and Sirius, and all they have done. "I cannot live up to your bravery," he whispered to each of their images inside his mind. They all sacrificed themselves for Harry. They each loved him so much that they were willing to protect him to the bitter end. Remus looked at his son and he knew he needed to fight for a better future for him. One where he would not be hated for what he was. A future where he can find his own piece of sunshine.
"Will you ever forgive me?" He asked his son at the thought of leaving him, "Will you understand?"
Remus walked back to the crib and laid Teddy down to sleep. The time was drawing near and he knew he had to leave. He sang softly as he left knowing this may be the very last time he gets to spend with his son.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
Don't you know dear how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away...
**sob** I *sniff* love it! *sniff* so realistic and awesome. _________________ "If it looks like we were scared to death, just a couple of kids trying to save each other. You should've seen it in color."
This is excellent. This makes Remus seem so more real to me...we never got to see his emotional side very much or his love for Tonks and Teddy.
I remember singing "You are my sunshine" to my twin nieces and this brought back emotional memories to me. Thanks for writing this story. _________________ Hermione: "Everything's going to change. Isn't it?"
