I dont know if any one else noticed but dose any one else think that some of the first names of the Black family are named after stars and constellations? Like Sirius, thats the name of the brightest star in ower sky (other then the sun) and its part if the Canis Major constellation which symbolises a dog. sound familiar to any one?

THIS MIGHT BE SOME WHAT OF A SPOILER!!!

Regulus , Sirius's brother, is also the name of a star in the constellation of Leo and his middle Arcturus is also a name of a star.
Andromeda , Tonk's mother, was a Black thats a name of a constellation.
And this would explains Draco's name. His mother Narcissa (dont think thats a star or constellation though) was a Black and i guess she wanted to do the tradition of nameing her son after a the contellation Draco. And that would explain why Scorpius is named Scorpius because thats also a name of a constellation....it was just a thought wut do u think?

I thought of the same thing when I read through their names. I know 'Draco' is Latin for Dragon. But, are the other names Latin as well?

And as for Narcissa goes, she's named after a Geek God I believe.

The constellations and stars were named after Greek myths. JKR actually got the name from the constellation. The entire Black family is named after stars, including some other character, like Merope, Draco, Scorpius and bunch others.

Narcissa was named after Narcissus, but I'm too tired to look up the legend, just check Greek myths. He wasn't a god, however. He was human

Narcissus was the one that fell in love with his reflection in a pool but learned it was only his reflection and killed himself out of sorrow and is dead body turned into a flower...but thats kinda off topic

Wow I never realised! My general knowledge isn't very good. I just thought most names were latin based and I read somewhere that JKR collected names just in general from everywhere, once I saw a sign to Otterry St Catchpole down the motorway!
I wonder whether naming them after stars is a metaphor/symbol for anything?

I knew that they were all named after stars because I read on wikipedia something like 'and Draco named his son Scorpius continuing the tradition of being named after stars and constellations' it's interesting. I never knew the whole thing about Sirius. That's very cool.

Just to think, isn't it kinda cool that Sirius is related to Draco :S

And to think all the Pure Blood fanatics want to keep up the centuries old inbreeding tradition.

Sadly, they don't teach genetics at Hogwarts. If they did, I'm sure everyone would have realized the "value" of muggle-borns. Smile
