What did Lily and James do for a living? I don't remember it being discussed in the books but they somehow left Harry piles and piles of gold. Does anybody know?

I'm not exactly sure what they did but they were in the Order of the Phoenix before going into hiding once the prophecy was made. As for the insane amount of gold, it's quite possible it came from Harry's ancestor(s). After all, James and Harry did inherit one of the most important Hallows- the Invisibility Cloak.

nope, the only thing i can think of being mentioned about them working is when the dursleys say that Potter never worked.
