So I don't understand, Dumbledores dead... But he still lives in his portraits and talks and has a life basically within his picture frame... Now is that his soul in there? Or is it a sort of part of him like a horcrux? JK Rowling never really explained her theory behind deceased wizards and their still very much alive portraits... _________________

All the paintings we have seen at Hogwarts are of dead people. They seem to be living through their portraits. How is this so? If there was a painting of Harry’s parents, would he be able to obtain advice from them?
That is a very good question. They are all of dead people; they are not as fully realised as ghosts, as you have probably noticed. The place where you see them really talk is in Dumbledore’s office, primarily; the idea is that the previous headmasters and headmistresses leave behind a faint imprint of themselves. They leave their aura, almost, in the office and they can give some counsel to the present occupant, but it is not like being a ghost. They repeat catchphrases, almost. The portrait of Sirius’ mother is not a very 3D personality; she is not very fully realised. She repeats catchphrases that she had when she was alive. If Harry had a portrait of his parents it would not help him a great deal. If he could meet them as ghosts, that would be a much more meaningful interaction, but as Nick explained at the end of Phoenix—I am straying into dangerous territory, but I think you probably know what he explained—there are some people who would not come back as ghosts because they are unafraid, or less afraid, of death. _________________ Blame it on a simple twist of fate. ~ Bob Dylan "To commemorate a past event, you kill and eat an animal. I dont remember exactly what was said and I dont have a copy of said book in front of me right now but Nick explained why some people become ghosts and some don't....
Basically he explained that one of the reasons ghosts stay back on eart, is because they are afraid of the afterlife, and dying.... So the spirit of the person in question stays back on earth. _________________
if i recall correctly, nick said that people (like himself) are afraid to go on to the after life, afraid of death itself, so they make an impression or an imprint, one of those, on the planet so once they die, they are still there, kinda trapped in limbo between life and death
Death like life is very powerful, speculation about Muggle death is mysterious, so I would count on the Deaths of the Wizarding world to be even more mysterious.
I would so enjoy visiting portraits of loved ones long gone asking for advice and just hearing their voices again would be so heart warming. Like for instance Severus taking the picture of Lily, how long had it been since he had seen Lily laugh, and the pain and joy it brought to him just seeing her signature.
I am left with meeting my loved one's in my dreams, while it is difficult to wake up and realize that they are not there, I am comforted by their words to me, even in the bad dreams. I do hope when I die that I will be able to do that ...talk to those I leave behind via their dreams...since I believe in the impossible..I probably will.... _________________ The answer to life is love
