Hey .. did anyone else recognize that some characters in the books were named after objects in our night sky???

Here's 2 examples:

Andromeda Tonks .. named after the Andromeda Galaxy ..

Sirius .. did you ever wonder why it isn't spelled Serious?? Well there is an actual star named 'Sirius' .. which is in the constellation of Orion's dog ... and Sirius's animangus from is a dog ...

Is there a secret connection there? JK never wrote about Harry in Astronomy Class (except for in the O.W.L. exam) .. so could there be some magical explanation that we (the readers) haven't learned yet?

Or is there just another connection between JK and astronomy?

The Sirius one makes sense, but I think the other one is just supposed to be an eccentric name for an eccentric person

Almost all the Blacks are named after stars or constellations including Bellatrix, Scorpius, Sirius, Draco, Andomeda, and Regulus.

Scorpius was the scorpion that stung and killed Orion.

The star, Sirius, is also known as the Dog Star.

Also, Merope. Merope is one of seven stars that makes up the constellation, Taurus. The myth of Merope was that she was one of seven sisters. She was shamed for marrying a mortal. Merope means "mortal."

GinnyX hit the nail on the head. Directly from the Wikipedia page on the Black Family...

Quote:
Many of the Black family members have names from Greek mythology, such as Cygnus, Cassiopeia, Andromeda and Orion; this is because the Black family are generally named after stars. Also, Narcissa Malfoy's name is a reference to Narcissus, the man who fell in love with his own reflection.

And it's weird, I completely stumbled onto that one. I was looking up the myth of Scorpius and Orion and clicking on some random links trying to find a connection between Bellatrix and Rodolphus (I might have too much free time on my hands) and saw Merope in the desciption under one of the links. I pounced on it and... yeah. Weird. The complete myth's details varies from site to site, but I put the universal gist of it in the post.

lol, I first knew about some of the HP characters being named after stars (Sirius, Regulus) from different websites (mugglenet, most likely). The book came after. I love that book!
But then only a couple of days ago someone said something about Bellatrix being named after a star. I looked it up and that's when I first came across the myth of Orion and Scorpius. So I've been googling the stars (just the ones with HP names) and reading the myths to see if there's a connection. I wonder if JKR was this specific in naming the characters or if she just used nice sounding names of stars and it's all coincidental.
