thats not right. its just a person that keeps a secret for you. all you have to do is read the beginning chapters of the 6th, it should get up caught up on it. _________________ Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

The secret keeper is the only one able to to actually say the location of a place that is unplottable. Grimmauld place was the Order's hideout and they wanted it unplottable. So Dumbledore as the leader was the only one who could tell people where they had their meetings. Snape this way too couldn't tell Voldy where they were _________________ "Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, spite spawns lies"

yeah thats how i understand it. but i want a bit more clarification. of course bella would know the place where she grew up. but since dumbledore the secret keeper will not reveal the secret, i wonder what bella will see when she goes to grimmauld place. harry saw numbers eleven and thirteen... but where there was supposed to be a twelve there was none.
im guessing that's what bella would see.
but flitwick, in POA, said that even voldemort had his nose pressed on the sitting room window of the potter's house, he wouldnt be able to see them. so waht exactly does a secret keeper protect? the people or the place? so if james stepped out of his house to get some fresh air, voldemort would be able to kill him? (assuming that he still doesnt know the secret) _________________

I'm thinking that the secret keeper protects the place, so then it would of course protect the people inside the place.
Voldy wouldn't know that #12 Grimmauld place was the hideout so he wouldn't lay in wait to ambush the people when they came outside. However, assuming he randomly passes #12 while taking a walk and Tonks steps outside, I'd say he'd be able to kill her.
In your example, I am guessing voldy would be able to kill James if James stepped outside. James would have to ummmmmmmm use floo powder to go to from place to place _________________ "Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, spite spawns lies"

^ I see what you are sayin, the death eaters do probably know its used as headquarters. I am guessing that even so they won't be able to enter unless the location is spoken to them by the secret keeper.
With the secret keeper (DD) dead I wonder if the enchantment is completely gone or if perhaps the secret keeper duty is automatically just passed to the new leader? (Kingsley Shackelbolt I am guessin) _________________ "Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, spite spawns lies"

i know that the secret dies with them... so im not sure if taht means, "nobody will be able to get into grimmauld place anymore," or "only those who knew of the secret before dumbledore's death can enter. no newbies..."
BUT HEY!!! how is the place protected?
i think they only protect the people, not the place.
flitwick said, even if voldie had his nose pressed against the window, he wouldnt be able to see them.
so that means he can still physically see and touch the house.
but why wasnt harry able to do that in OOTP? why was there no number 12? i got it! its not because of the fidelius. its because it is unplottable. sirius said that his dad made it unplottable. so since before, it had already been like that, no number twelve.
but if his dad did not make it unplottable, then even voldemort would be able to see and touch the house. except that he wouldnt be able to see the members of the Order when they were in that house.
so here.
if there is a meeting, voldemort cannot kill, say, tonks.
if tonks steps out of the house, thats the only time he can kill her. _________________

what if the door wasn't locked and Voldie walked into the Potter's house? would he just see nobody there, even if they were right under his nose? _________________
