Didnt Hepzibah Smith say that she was distantly related to Helga hufflepuff. SHe also has the cup of hufflepuff, to sort of prove it.

i dunno, but maybe zacharias smith is related to hepzibah smith? maybe she's his aunt, or grandma, i dunno...

well, zacharias smith is in hufflepuff. do you think he's the heir of hufflepuff?

yeah, why not? but he has such an unpleasant personality its quite unnerving to think of him as the heir of hufflepuff. nevertheless, there are clues that point to it.

sure, it's possible.
On one hand Smith is such a common surname. But on the other hand I think JKR picks each name out carefully and for some reason, so this is worth looking into.

well yeah i guess its a common name. remember the mark evans thing? Mark Evans is the guy whom Dudley bullied in book5. Everyone was now starting to wonder what Mark Evans' relationship was with lily. nephew? another son? what?

but then, Mark Evans turned out to be purely coincidental and his role in the story is nothing more than two additional words in the book.

but then again, the wizarding population is very small.perhaps all the smiths are interrelated, just like all the potters are probably interrelated, like all the weasleys, malfoys, crouches, gaunts, dumbledores, lestranges, etc. so if that were the case, then zacharias smith might have been related to hepzibah smith, thus increasing the odds that he is a descendant of helga hufflepuff, which, in turn, increases the odds that he is the heir of hufflepuff.

That is very true. I was surprised when I read that Mark Evans had nothing to do with Lily Evans. Of all names to pick, it's strange. But yeah, Smith could just as easily be a coincidence as not. JKR just keeps us guessing.

yup. you never really know. but id really like to believe its cedric diggory because he is the best hufflepuff. more "heir-ish" type than zacharias smith. you think cedric might be a smith through his mother? or hey, better clue. maybe hepzibah's maiden name is diggory. hence, that would make the diggory family descendants of helga hufflepuff. so cedric could be the heir!

I would love a complete history and family tree of the Wizarding community... I mean, I know it's huge but it would answer so many questions.

well, jk said that she might come up with a wizarding encyclopedia where she could have fun with all the minor characters. but then the heir of hufflepuff thing is so big that if it doesnt come out in deathly hallows, it would be completely irrelevant. so we can hardly expect anything from zacharias and hepzibah smith if they come out in that encyclopedia.

Well not necassarily them, but something... like the Evans and the Potters and the Longbottoms. The last two are on the Black family tree, but there was no sign (that we know of as of yet) that there were any names blasted. I would like to know if there are any connections.
A wizarding encyclopedia would be brilliant. Like a muggle version of Hogwarts, A History.

ooh... id definitely want to get my hands on that book. hogwarts a history, and the half blood prince's copy of advanced potion making. more than that encyclopedia thing. id also like a catalogue from borgin and burkes, the most fascinating magical store.

ginnyx: good point. but ill still get the catalogue and tell them to touch the things first before i do.

well, cedric is more "heir of hufflepuff" material. but zacharias smith has more of a chance.
