at the beginning of this book, uncle Vernon locks Hedwig up in his/her cage so that he/she can't send any mail to Harry's friend...how did he know that's what owls are used for, Aunt Petunia must have said something to him and it just shows she knows at least a little about the magic world

nah because remember all theowls that came to privit drive for Harry in the first book trying to give him letters....
