He's heard the prophecy.
He knows that only Harry can kill Voldermort because Harry has the "special power(s)"

| It has and it all reality, Dumbledore couldn't have killed Voldy, because you have to have the suspense prolonged and Harry IS the one that has to finish him off. |

| I absolutely believe Dumbeledore could have tried to kill him and could have reduced him to what he was before Harry arrived at Hogwarts. Voldy would have been alive even if DD thought he killed him, because of the horcruxes. |

The prophecy could be open for interpretation. Dumbledore could think it means one thing when it really means something else. Maybe Harry isn't the only one who can kill him. Who knows.

Only because Snape heard the Prophecy being said by Professor Trelawney and told Voldemort. Voldemort thought he had to do what the Prophecy said, so really, all in all, it was Snape's fault that all this even happened. If it weren't for Snape, Harry might've still had, well, everyone; Sirius'd be alive, James would be alive, and so would Lily.
Talk about revenge on Snape's side. x]

He probably had chances during the First War and he also probably could've killed Voldy in the Department of Mysteries.

I dont think he could have, or wanted to if possible in some way.
He had knowledge of the Horcrux, not 100% proof, but some knowledge that Voldemort could have at least one at the time.
If he truely could have killed Voldemort, I dont see why he didnt do it during the first war.
^^That is why I dont think he can, or wants to. He wants more to happen to Voldemort than a simple death.

dd knows he can only be killed by the one he marked his equal. sadly it was poor harry and only harry can...

in the book snape didn't hear the full prophecy.
