I need some help here, deciding what to do...

I've recently been accused of cheating on the ACT because of the five-point increase between my second and third ACT scores (long story as to why I took it that many times). I've been given three options: Retest, cancel the score, or appeal to the ACT place about it. I've got until this Friday to notify the headquarters of my decision.

I'm scared sh*tless and I'm highly considering retesting again just to get it over with but I'm so freakin scared that the new score will not "confirm" my third score. What in the heck should I do?

wait...they think you cheated? but why? because you did better? that was the point of retesting I thought Confused have they given any concrete reason as to why? if not, I'd say appeal.

What happens if an appeal fails?

They told me because my Composite Score went up by five points and apparently, that's a HUGE increase... Rolling Eyes

I'm really annoyed, insulted, and rather scared.

that's what it sounds like.. they can't just hurl accusations like that. it's not fair. maybe you could look up appeal precedents and see if its possible to win one.

Apparently the person I sat next to in the examination room had really similar answers to mine. Confused

I have never in my life cheated on a homework assignment or test. And my high school GPA isn't going to help me at all (it sucks) but that's why I'm attending community college first, so I can go onto even higher education, but that isn't possible without an ACT score... Confused

You should just appeal, if you win good job..... If you lose, you should retake it.....

...shouldn't the answers be similar if you pass? isn't it just multiple choice questions? it's been awhile since I took it...but I think it was. so...they don't have a leg to stand on.

Arabella, you are making a LOT of sense. But what the other poster said, I'm going to retake it on a National Test Date if I don't win the appeal.

Thanks guys.

All these standardized tests are confusing me..... Do you take both the SAT and the ACT? or just one of them?

Where I come from, it's only the ACT.

I hate standardized tests...specially when they accuse you of cheating! Mad

On top of what Bella said, don't they give out different versions of the test to different students?

Also, did they single you out? Did this other person get accused of cheating as well? What proof do they have that he didn't cheat off of you?

I meant to vote for the appeal, but for some reason my non-working brain voted for retest. So take there should actually be one less vote for the retest and one extra for the appeal. Sorry about that.

I always assumed they were slightly different from one another, but I never actually knew.

I have no idea if the other person was accused of cheating as well. I saw this person for four hours that day and that's it.

I would definitely appeal. If you just accept their accusation, then they will assume you are admitting to cheating. If your score went up, even by just five points, you should be proud of yourself. You should be proud, not scared. Five points is still five points better than you did last time, that's an achievement.
If all they have on you is that the person near you happens to have similar answers to yours, then that is their problem, not yours. The fact that you've been retaking the test with your score increasing each time, just goes to show how you've been working harder to improve.
Don't accept a false accusation. Stand firm and appeal. You shouldn't even be having a reason to appeal. It sounds like they are already considering you guilty. Don't let them get away with that.

5 points is a lot of points on the ACTs <.<

That's pretty bad ass, though. I'm impressed.

APPEAL IT.
SUE.

I'd say appeal to the headquarter, its just not fair to accuse someone of "cheating" without some sort of physical proof, that you actually cheated that test. Did you have to pay to give the test?

That really does suck. They have no ways of prooving that you cheated.

oooh, I didn't know that. I only took the SATs and 5 points on that test isn't worth three endless Saturday mornings, lol.

Yeah -- appeal, appeal, appeal. They have no proof that you cheated -- especially since you didn't cheat. You didn't cheat, right?

It is just as likely that the other person cheated off of you, and it's wrong to accuse you.

I did not cheat; even if I wanted to, I couldn't. I was talking to the girl next to me for a brief moment asking her what school she went to and we actually had to scoot our chairs closer to each other in order to keep the conversation semi-private.

I'm still kind of scared about the appealing process because I've never been through "court" per se in my whole life. I wonder how many of these accusations are thrown around across the country each test that is taken?

I'm going to appeal.
