Wizard's hats seemed to have been mentioned a couple of times during the series, but I'm wondering what their actual purpose or application or use really was. On Harry's first year school list it says:
| Quote: |
| One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear |
But did they really have to wear them all the time? It didn't seem like it because of the frequency that they are mentioned. In the first movie, as I recall, they wear their hats during the first feast, but no time after that (nor during the rest of the movies).
Thoughts? |

maybe Dumbledore just has a thing for hats, so he makes the students get them. did it ever mention them wearing them in the books? _________________

I never paid any heed to them really.I know J.K said they wore them but when reading the books then in the movies they don't wear them, makes me completely ignore that the hats are there.
Or she could have forgot about them.Seems unlikely that she did,but she has made mistakes in the books as readers like to point out. |

Oh, I don't care what the movies do or say. I don't pay attention to them. I'm sure there is a logical reason for JKR not mentoning the hats anymore. Or maybe there isn't. Either way, I don't take the movies as canon. _________________

Well, JKR did mention the purpose of the hats somewhere on the net. I saved it on my HDD:
No doubt many of you have asked yourself why Wizards and Witches prefer long, flowing robes and tall, pointy hats over more "casual" clothings such as Muggles wear. The answer is more simple than one might think. First of all, it is more comfortable than the restrictive and tight clothing most Muggles favor. Try sitting a broom while wearing a tight denim skirt. The long and voluminous sleeves can be made to hold everything from pets, to wands, to small books. Secondly, some wizards believe that the color robe you wear can affect the results of your magic, depending on what type of spell you are casting. While this view is not generally held to be true, it is certainly something under consideration of the purists. Therefore, multi-colored Muggle clothing would not suit at all. One thing that is agreed upon, however, is that the act of donning a robe seems to help the witch or wizard perform their best. It may only be an act of symbolism, but it shows that something out of the ordinary is about to take place. The witch or wizard seems to stand taller, hold their wand more steadily and slouch less when properly attired. Tall and pointy hats are worn to focus the energy which pours from a wizard's body as he casts a spell. Without a hat, the energy is free to pour from the top of his head, rather than being channeled into his wand. The conical shape of the hat traps the energy and forces it back into the caster, thus making each spell more powerful. Although upon occasion, a hat has been known to fly off of the head of a witch or wizard during a particularly powerful spell.
I don't remember why I saved it, but I'll remember _________________ Post Count = Number of Posts + 1 |

Maybe in the books they wore them as a hobby or ordinary cloths so it's not extra written... _________________ Post Count = Number of Posts + 1 |

They indeed were in CoS (chapter 5): "Through the forest of pointed black Hogwarts hats, Harry saw a long line of scared-looking first years fiIing into the Hall."
Riddle is also mentioned "taking off his pointed hat" (chapter 13).
They are mentioned also in PoA (chapter 5): "Neville's pet toad croaked loudly from under his hat" and later: "It was a sea of pointed black hats; each of the long House tables was lined with students, their faces glimmering by the light of thousands of candles, which were floating over the tables in midair."
And in GoF (chapter 15): ""Weasley, straighten your hat," Professor McGonagall snapped at Ron." And later: "D'you think he'd sign my hat in lipstick?" And in chapter 20: "Harry got up on Sunday morning and dressed so inattentively that it was a while before he realized he was trying to pull his hat onto his foot instead of his sock." And in chapter 26: ""Snape said Moody's searched his office as well?" Ron whispered, his eyes alight with interest as he Banished a cushion with a sweep of his wand (it soared into the air and knocked Parvati's hat off)."
And in OotP (chapter 17): ""Maybe I'll skive off Divination," he said glumly, as they stood in the courtyard after lunch, the wind whipping at the hems of robes and brims of hats." And in chapter 18: "But he gave Ron a significant look and the two of them hung back as the rest of the team filed back outside, muffled in their cloaks, their hats pulled low over their ears." (Although those could be winter hats. Hermione is mentioned wearing a hat in HBP chapter 17 "Hermione was hurrying toward them, very pink-faced and wearing a cloak, hat, and gloves." But that's also probably a winter hat). _________________ "The truth. It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should be treated with caution." -- Albus Dumbledore |

oooo did you look for all those or what?
I guess they're just not mentioned enough to be included in our mental picture of the students. plus I just imagine them looking silly. _________________

Yeah, well, that's what I said. It's ordinary cloths, so they wear hats always but it's like hobby or general garments. _________________ Post Count = Number of Posts + 1 |
