Here's an interesting question:

When Dumbledore put on the ring Horcrux he was ignorant to the fact that it "carried a terrible curse" - a curse that in fact resulted in his death.

BUT, if the ring caused Dumbledore to die because he put it on, then why didn't the locket cause Harry, Ron, or Hermione to die when they wore it around their neck? Wouldn't the locket carry a curse just as strong?

Arguably the locket did try to kill Harry, but that was only when it sensed it was about to be destroyed. It seems to me that the locket should have been the death of Kreacher (if he had worn it around his neck) as well as Dolores Umbridge and Harry/Ron/Hermione.

Could the curse be due to the fact that the ring is the only Horcrux that is also a Hallow?

Each Horcrux worked differently. Well, what I mean is, they all had different protections around them and their effects were, for the most part, different.
The diary was interactive and drained the person's soul who wrote in it... and allowed Voldemort (Tom) to take over the person, as was the case with Ginny.
The necklace preyed on the person's fears.
And the ring was poisonious.

the ring was just lying on the floor of a broken down shack. it needed extra protection. but as it was, voldy was confident nobody could ever find the locket. so why would it need cursed?

Yeah, it's protected enough by being under fatal poison that you had to drink.

Yeah, the locket also made everyone who wore it feel terrible. The trio had to take shifts on wearing it.

GinnyY will be happy to hear that. He's been trying to convince me of that one for years now.

haha

well lets see...

frodo baggins received the ring from a tired old wizard wanting to save the known world. he and his band of merry men... including, an elf, a dwarf and some humans travelled far and wide dodging baddies and an evil wizard. who wants nothing more than to destroy frodo so he can be in control of the one ring.

i can see some simularities
