Okay, the full title, which is long and wouldn't fit in the Title Bar, is
I was Kidding Myself if I Thought You would Ever Love Me...
I know, quite a mouthful.
So this is a prequel to one of my other stories, which has undergone a title change, as well as a character name change. (Day to Heather.) This takes place starting in Harry's third year. Hope you enjoy!
The Owlery was a peaceful place, especially this time of night. The owls swooped silently in and out past the thirteen year old girl standing out the window, looking upward into the sky, the millions of stars reflected into her eyes like tiny jewels. The night was clear, crisp, and silent, the only sound being the distant howls of a wolf and the gentle rustlings of the owls preparing for the approaching morning.
Sudden footsteps made the girl jump, and she quickly advanced further into the darkness, just in case it was Filch. The door slowly creaked open, and a slim but hunched figure entered, obviously standing this way to avoid recognition should it be needed. Deciding it was a student, the girl softly whispered,
"Hello." The figure didn't respond, and reached for an owl. Now the girl was determined to be noticed, so she said again, louder this time, "Hello." The figure jumped and swore, whirling around to face her.
"Oh. You scared me..." he turned back to the owl and began hastily tying a letter to it's outstretched leg.
"Sorry." The girl said. "I'm Heather."
"Harry." said the boy, not turning around.
"I know."
The boy froze, then slowly turned to face Heather. "Well, glad to, er, meet you, Heather. See you." he nudged the owl into the night, and pushed past Heather and out the door.
"Bye..." Heather sighed and looked back out the window, where the slightest strip of pink could be seen on the horizon. After a moment, she too turned and left the Owlery.

"Ready for Hogsmeade?" Eve sang, sitting herself down next to Heather at the Gryffindor table.
"Whatever." It was later, and Heather hadn't quite recovered from the snubbing form earlier.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing Eve."
"You stayed up all night again, didn't you?"
"No." Heather lied, pouring herself some coffee.
"Yes you did!" Eve said, slapping some warm eggs on her friends plate.
"So what?" Heather snapped.
"Something else happened."
"No it didn't!" But Heather's eyes drifted down the table to where Harry and his friends sat.
"He was there, wasn't he?"
"Shut up, Eve!"
The girls were silent.
"Sorry, Heather." Eve said quietly.
"It's okay. You're right, I'm just a little tired. Shall we go now?" The two girls stood and left the hall right after Harry and his friends. Eve, Heather, Ron, and Hermione started for the doors, but Harry headed for the marble staircase.
"Maybe he's sick..." Eve whispered, answering Heather's unasked question.
"Maybe...I think I'll stay here today."
"But Heather, it's the first trip, and-" Eve said, stopping and looking after her best friend.
"I'll go next time, I promise!" Heather ran up the stairs, stopping a few feet behind Harry.
"Okay..." Eve said to no one, alone in the hall.

Eve sulkily followed Ron and Hermione down to the village. As Ron and Hermione swerved off for Hogsmeade, Ever herself headed for the notoriously haunted building at the edge of the town. There was an okay-looking boy with white blond hair leaning against a fence, along with two other larger burly-looking boys. The first was boasting about something in a drawling voice, but he stopped as Eve approached.
"What d'you want?" he sneered.
"Nothing, I just wanted to look at the shack." she said coolly, not pleased with the boy's rudeness.
"I've seen you hanging around with that Mudblood." he said, looking her up and down. "Shame you went to Gryffindor. We can fix that, though." he held out his hand for her to shake. "I can help you get better friends."
"Gryffindor and proud of it." she said, pushing past him to look closer at the old building. The boy rolled his eyes and the three of them walked away.
***
"...met the most awful Slytherin in the town today." Eve was saying as she and Heather sat down again at the Gryffindor table for dinner.
"Hm..." Heather said, gazing up the table to where Harry was being showered with sweets by Ron and Hermione.
"Are you even listening?" Eve said, spearing a potato with her fork.
"Hm..."
"Heather!"
"What?" Heather said, whirling around to face Eve. "What?"
"You're not listening to me!"
"Yeah I was! You were talking about stupid Hogsmeade."
"It's not stupid! You should've gone!"
"I had other things to do."
"Oh yeah, stalking a boy who would never even look at you is really important." Eve slapped a hand over her mouth as Heather stood up form the table and stormed from the hall. "Heather!" Eve called, hurrying after her friend. "Heather, wait!"
"Wait for what?"
"I'm sorry!"
"Whatever." Ever opened her mouth to retort when the boy stepped into the Entrance Hall.
"Oh look, boys, it's our dear friend from Hogsmeade and her charming little Mudblood friend. Changed your mind since this afternoon?" He sneered. Heather glared at him and Eve, then turned and stomped up the stairs.

Eve tried to push past him onto the grounds, but he grabbed her fprearm as she passed. "Let me go!" she cried, trying to twist away. "Leave me alone! Get away!" he smirked.
"Just tell me one thing;" he whispered in her ear. "why do you hate me?"
"I never said I hated you! But you're getting pretty close!" he opened his mouth, but Professor McGonagall came through the door.
"Mr. Malfoy!" she said, "what do you think you are doing?"
"Nothing, Professor!" he said, releasing Eve at once.
"Ms. Stark?" Professor McGonagall said, raising her brows at Eve. Malfoy glared at Eve.
"No Professor. Nothing." The teacher nodded, then walked away.

Heather was sitting on her window sill in the dorm, her fingertips pressed lightly to the fogged glass. It had begun to rain, and the temperature certainly dropped a few degrees since the Hogsmeade trip. Heather sighed. Eve was her best friend. They never fought. Ever. Heather stood and walked towards the dormitory door, but stopped when she heard footsteps and Eve's voice.
"...think she overreacted, getting upset like that." Eve was saying.
"It was a slip of the tongue." argued another girl, one of the other girls in their dorm.
"Still..."
***Just before/Meanwhile***
Eve started her slow way up the marble staircase to try and apologize to Heather. About halfway up, she met Parvati and Lavender.
"Hi, girls." she said politely. They exchanged a glance.
"Erm, hi, Eve. How's it going?" Lavender said.
"Okay...I guess. Something wrong?"
"No..."
"What was wrong with Heather?" Parvati blurted. "We saw her run out of the Great Hall, and we wondered...we were...concerned."
"Oh, um...no, everything's fine." Eve said. They glanced at each other.
"You know, you can tell us, Eve." Lavender said consolingly.
"Yeah," Parvati piped up, "we won't tell."
"Well...I don't know..." Eve said uncertainly.
"C'mon, Eve, we might be able to help." Lavender urged.
"Um...okay. See, Heather likes Ha-erm, this...guy, and-"
"Is he in our year?" Parvati interrupted.
"Yeah, and-"
"Is he in our house?" said Lavender.
"Yes..." Eve paused, waiting for more questions. When none came, she continued. "And, erm, long story short, I said something I didn't mean." The girls were moving again, almost to the Common Room.
"Do you think she overreacted?"
Eve thought about it. They were walking up the stairs now. "I...don't...think she overreacted, getting upset like that."
"It was a slip of the tongue."
"Still."
Suddenly, Heather burst through the dormitory door. Tears were working their way down her face.
"Heather-?" Eve started, but Heather interrupted her.
"Overreacted, did I?" she cried.
"No, I-" Eve said again.
"Save it, Eve! Go spread rumors with your new friends!" Heather pushed past them and down the stairs, Eve following as fast as she could. They tore through the Common Room, no regard for the heads turning their way.
"Leave me alone, Eve, or I'll hex you!

"I don't know what you see in her, Draco. There's really nothing special, if you ask me..." growled Pansy Parkinson as Draco entered the Slytherin Common Room.
"No one DID ask you, Pansy." Draco responded before sweeping off to the boys dormitories. _________________ We're goin' down down in an earlier round,

"Heather!" Eve said, shocked, "We're best-"
"Correction," Heather snarled, "were best friends!" She turned and stormed through the portrait hole, startling some last minute dinner-eaters.
Eve turned back to the Common Room, all of which was still staring. "What?" she shouted. "What are you all staring at?" Everyone looked away.
***
"Mrs. Stanley?" a voice said behind Heather. She jumped and turned away from the front doors.
"Oh...yes, Professor?" Heather said in a weary voice. She wasn't in the mood for detention. Especially not from McGonagall, whose essay she had yet to start.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"Oh, erm...I was...going for a walk." Heather stammered.
"Hm...no. Not with that Sirius Black running around."
"Oh, yes...sorry, Professor."
"Back to your dormitory."
"Yes, Professor."

It was late, and Eve's heavy eyelids were fluttering as she waited up for Heather. She was the last one in the Common Room, as it was approaching one in the morning. Suddenly, the portrait hole swung open.
"Heather?" Eve whispered.
Heather froze. "What?" she snapped.
"Where have you been? I was worried..."
"Yeah right." Heather snorted. "It's none of your business where I've been."
"I'm sorry, Heather, but you don't understand-"
"What don't I understand? I think I've pretty much grasped the fact that you think I overreacted!"
"No, Heather, you didn't hear-"
"I didn't hear you say you hated me? I don't need to, but thanks."
"Heather!" Eve cried, her eyes welling up in tears. "Can you just listen to me?" Heather remained silent.
"Thank you." Eve said. "We're best friends. Do you honestly think I would say that I hated you?"
"You said I over-"
"No, I didn't! I was saying that I didn't think you had! You must not have heard me."
"Eve? Am I really that dumb to you? I think I know what I heard, and-"
"She's not lying." said a new voice. Heather jumped and Eve swore.
"Sorry." the voice said again, and Hermione Granger stood and walked into the firelight.
"How long have you been here?" Heather asked. "We didn't see you!"
Hermione smiled wryly. "I've been here for a while...I fell asleep while I was doing my Ancient Runes homework...but anyway, Eve isn't lying."
"What?" Heather said.
"She wasn't lying; she really was telling Parvati and Lavender that she didn't think you overreacted."
"Okay...so?"
Hermione shrugged. "Eve and I are friends from Runes. It kind of bothered me that you were mad at each other..." she said sadly. "Well, I suppose I'll go on to bed now...night, girls."
"Hermione?" Eve said, and Hermione turned back to them. "is something wrong?"
"No..." Hermione sighed. "Except...well, Ron isn't to pleased with me."
"Oh...is there anything we can do?" Heather offered, and Eve nodded.
"No, I don't...oh, Crookshanks, not now, please..." Hermione said as a ginger cat prowled down the stairs. "He's why..."
"Well, maybe we can help you guys settle it."
"Really?" Hermione said.
"Of course. You helped us..." Eve said.
"Thanks, girls."
"No problem." They said together, and the giggled.
