I voted 'yes'. If someone I loved did not want to continue their life for whatever reason, I would much rather be able to say goodbye and have them die peacefully than to discover that they ended their life in a possibly slow, painful and/or messy way.

i know this kid who had to do a debate on this topic. he had to do one day where wanted it legalized and the other day where he didnt. well on the day he wanted legalized everyone was in an uproar, especially when he said after he was done that he trully in his own opinion thought it should be legalized. the teacher was outraged, and he was the only one in his class that thought it should be legal. the funny thing is, that i live the state, the only state that has it legal. also a lot of people dont know it believe it or not, or im sure that it would have been voted against by now. i guess if your terminally ill and wanted to end it all, move to oregon.

I had a college assignment on this topic.

There is no question--it should be legal. If I want to end my life for whatever reason, then it should be my choice. Keyword there: MY, as in, MY life. No one has a right to dictate a choice like this for another human being.

I completely think it should be legal. Life is only as valuable as the one experiencing it deems it to be, so if somebody thinks that they would prefer death, then by all means let them have it peacefully. To force someone to remain alive against their will seems analagous to torture.

This is a tough one. All kinds of things come into play. If it was legal, it'd be kind of difficult to regulate it. I'm all for it when it comes to terminally ill patients who are in a lot of pain. But I don't know how I feel about it in other cases. If I no longer wanted to live, for whatever reason, and doctors wouldn't preform it on me (or however it works), I would be upset. But at the same time.. do you really just let someone off themselves? Are they in the right state of mind to be able to make that decision? If not, who gets to make the decision? I voted yes, for terminally ill people. But like I said, I don't know how people would regulate it. What if someone was like.. I'm sick with.. Bipolar Disorder!?. Bipolar disorder is a fairly dangerous disease (15% of Bipolar sufferers commit suicide). I'm depressed, and I don't want to live anymore. What do you do? It's their life, but are they in the right state to make that kind of decision? At the same time, I think it's selfish to ask someone who doesn't want to live so badly to keep living. I don't know. I'm just confusing the hell out of myself, I guess.

I am completely for euthanasia, and I think it's a crime that they sent Jack Kevorkian to prison for ending the suffering of humans who wanted it over with.

We put dogs down when they are sick; why can't people decide that they want to end their lives when they are sick? It's humane with dogs but not with people? The world has gone completely mad!

As Katie mentioned, I think it would be difficult to regulate.

I haven't heard of this? From what I have read it basically kills you peacefully?

If so then I think it should be legal, it's your life and you should be able to do what you wish with it. Of course there should be limitations, ie a teenage girl that is upset because she broke up with boyfriend shouldn't have the option to do this, but if you're old and wish to die then you should have the right to do that.

A teenage girl can't make her own medical decisions anyway.

I think that if an adult wants his life terminated, then that is his choice.

I think it should be given if the disease is terminal and the sufferer is in constant, unbearable pain.

What is the point of living your last days in pain?

And some people feel that they want to have control over something, and since they cant control themselves medical-wise, they want to make their death an act of themselves, not the disease.

I know, I was just giving a radical example, but I agree with you.

I voted yes. I think it should be legalized just because if you kill somebody or commit a major felony and all you're going to do is sit and rot in an old jail instead of be killed, well that's just plain stupid.

If you kill someone then in my book that gives the government all the right to kill you. I don't care what way, hanging, lethal injection, electric chair, or getting shot at by 10 people.

It's kind of a thing where you have to grasp what a life really is to understand and fully comprehend the thoughts behind it.

This is about mercy killing for citizens who no longer wish to live, not the death penalty.

i didnt vote because as much as i feel a person who is basically a vegetable should just be given peace it would have too many problems.

for example if a kid or teen is terminal and the parents know they would have wanted peace... would the parents consent be murder?

or do we make it for just adults and let the kids suffer?

good discussion idea though.

Well, of course it would be an option for terminally ill children. The parents and children would have to agree, though. I just can't picture parent actually making that decision.

well i vote that we should just let them commit their own suicide. the issue is difficult to regulate. so take your own life if you must, and blame no one. the doctor will just tell you what to take and how to take it.

however if you are in a coma, then, the doctors decide if it is a very painful ordeal that you must die in dignity, or if there is still a chance or what. im a little apprehensive about family members making the decision because it is more likely that a family member will want the patient dead than a neutral doctor. the doctor doesnt care about inheritance issues, while the family does.
