Father Kills Son in Hunting Accident After Mistaking Him for Turkey

Spoiler:

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. — The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.

Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

"He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught."

Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances.

4.5-Magnitude Aftershocks Rumble Illinois, Indiana
Spoiler:

WEST SALEM, Ill — The U.S. Geological Survey says it has recorded one of the strongest aftershocks so far from Friday's Illinois earthquake.

Geologists say the temblor just before 12:40 a.m. Monday registered at 4.5 magnitude at its epicenter about 5 miles northwest of Mount Carmel. The location is in the same area as Friday's early-morning 5.2-magnitude earthquake, which was followed by a 4.5 magnitude aftershock about 5 1/2 hours later.

The Monday morning aftershock was at least the 15th since Friday's quake.

Kids Playing Ball on Florida Beach Stumble Upon Skeleton
Spoiler:

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Authorities say a group of children playing ball on a beach discovered an adult human skeleton in the back yard of home near Port Orange, Florida.

The sheriff's office in Volusia County says yesterday's find is being investigated as a suspicious death. The person had been dead for a few months, but it's not clear if the remains belong to a man or woman.

The group of children, ages 11 to 13, chased their ball into the large yard of the oceanfront home. They found the decomposed remains in thick grass about three feet from a sea wall.

The sheriff's office is talking to the residents of the home.

Port Orange is 6 miles south of Daytona Beach.

Toddler Critically Injured After Wind-Blown Stroller Sinks Into Lake Michigan
Spoiler:

CHICAGO — A gust of wind blew a 2-year-old in a stroller into Lake Michigan, where the boy remained submerged for at least 15 minutes before being pulled out unconscious but alive.

The child's grandfather, who had been pushing the stroller on the lakeside Friday afternoon, jumped into the harbor to try to save the boy, the Chicago Fire Department said.

Witnesses said the frantic grandfather struggled in the frigid water, just off a 70-foot long pier, pointing a few feet away and shouting, "Child! Child!"

"He was just moaning in the breakwater, crying," said John Derscheid, who called 911.

Winds at the time were about 20 mph with gusts of about 30 mph, a meteorologist said.

The boy was in critical condition at Children's Memorial Hospital, authorities said Friday night. A hospital spokeswoman declined to comment Saturday.

The grandfather, who appeared to be in his 60s, was in fair condition Saturday afternoon at St. Joseph Hospital, where he was being treated for exposure.

The toddler was strapped in the three-wheeled jogging stroller about 10 feet below the surface of the 42-degree water before rescue divers pulled him out.

Derscheid said the scene "is going to stick with me for the rest of my life."

15 minutes??!! wow

Eighth-Grader Faces Felony Charge for Planting Nuts in Lunch of Allergic Classmate
Spoiler:

LEXINGTON, Ky. — An eighth-grader in Kentucky is accused of putting peanut butter cookie crumbs in the lunchbox of a classmate with a severe peanut allergy.

The allergic student did not eat the cookies Thursday at Morton Middle School in Lexington.

Fayette County schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall says the accused student was arrested on a felony wanton endangerment charge. The student will face charges in the juvenile court system.

Deffendall says it was well known that the other student suffered allergies. There was no known history of problems between the two 13-year-olds.

For those allergic to peanuts, trace amounts of peanut oil can cause severe reactions and even death.

I thought the same thing. Do you think his parents were sort of sealing his fate when they named him Hunter? That sort of obsession with the "sport" cannot be healthy. It's a cute name when it isn't actually after the pastime.

Haha . . . I was going to say pretty much the same thing. It must be so freaking rad to stumble upon a skeleton.

On the sad side, I hope that they figure out who it is and who left the body there.

Again, I had a similar thought process. Also, I also thought that those jogging strollers seemed a bit dangerous. I have issues with kids being so strapped in.

Why teach kids about such frivalou things as death. Let's let them assume that they will live forever no matter what they do.
