Harry wakes up, because his scar is hurting and he just had a dream of Voldemort killing Frank the oldie. Well, he then writes a letter to Sirius. In the letter, he says that Dudley had chucked his Playstation out of the window. The question is:
How did Dudley get a Playstation?!
This letter is in the summer holiday, so it is about July-August 1994.
His console! He had a console, he is still so annoying to me! _________________ Padfoot, so brave,

Knowing Dudley, he probably forced his father to some how pull some strings, pay a billion dollars, and get him a Playstation a long time before it was released. Yes, everything can be explained away in my mind. _________________ What luck for ruler that men do not think. ~ AH
she never looked up when the playstation was released, and just included the most famous console.
She probably just remembered it being popular around that time. She didn't think to look up it's exact release date, because it never occured to her that she'd be off by a couple of months. Her editors didn't notice it, either. _________________

i dont really think it makes a difference. Harry was born in 1980, (im pretty sure) she wrote it sometime in the 1990s. _________________

He was definitely born in 1980 and yeah, she wrote it in the 90's...
I all theacts aren't perfect, then I can look past it as long as the inconsistancies don't ruin the story, which it didn't. _________________

I thought that too! Kind of like in the movie The Devil Wears Prada where the assistant gets copies of a yet to be released Harry Potter book for the boss's daughters I can't remember which book it was.

In the The Devil Wears Prada book it is unknown, but I believe the book came out just before HBP, so when you read the book you are supposed to think it was that one the characters are referring to. In the movie it was supposed to be the Seventh book, DH. When the movie The Devil Wears Prada was being filmed, the seventh title was still unknown to us, possibly even JKR. In the movie they only referred to it as "the next book" but on the train you can see the twins holding the binded manuscripts and they have the number seven on it. _________________

This is what happened: JK originally intended the story to take place in our timeframe, instead of exactly a decade earlier, what would be the point of that? However, the sole piece of information from which we derive the timeline (before the release of Book 7) is Nick's Deathday cake, which reads the date 31 October 1492. I reckon she just picked 1492 without really thinking about it because it seemed like a profound date; Columbus crossed the Atlantic this year. However, her fans thought about this more, and deduced that, since it was Nick's 500th, the year must have been 1992, and Harry had entered his second year, which meant that Book 4 would begin in summer 1994. But this was only really discussed after JK had written the transcript for this book, thinking it would take place in our modern time line; by that point she'd probably forgotten that she'd ever written 1492 on Nick's cake.

Actually, JKR started wriitng the story in 1991, so she kept that year as the year Harry entered Hogwarts. All other years come off of that. She chose 1991, first.... 1492 came after.
You can figure out the year using Nicik's deathdate... but 1991 came first. _________________
