I'm reading HBP for the first time and I just noticed on my page 485 that Slughorn refers to Ron as Rupert!
Did JKR mix up her character with the actor that portrays him??
Anyone else notice this? It's about 2/3rds down the page
"Had a house-elf taste every bottle after what happened to your poor friend Rupert." |

LOL! No, Slughorn dosen't care about Ron. He does this many times through the book. He only likes to "Mingle" with the students that he believes had promise for being very successful. He just dosen't care for Ron. _________________ Join Reality Of It All!!! |

So you think that Slughorn referred to Ron as Rupert just because he didn't care enough to know his name? It's a funny coincidence if that's the case. |

It's not a typo... he calls Ron a bunch of names, Rupert happens to be one of them. Both names start with R, so Slughorn was close. _________________

Actually we may never know if it was a typo or not unless JKR tells us.
We dont know we did not write the book.. _________________

HBP ch 22, pg 485 (US ed)
"Had a house-elf taste every bottle after what happened to your poor friend Rupert."
A typo? Not likely... it's a running joke throughout the book... SLughorn just doesn't consider Ron important enough to take the time to learn his name.
HBP ch 18, pg397
"There you are then," said Slughorn, handing Harry and Ron a glass of mead each before raising his own. "Well, a very happy birthday, Ralph-"
That would mean two typos. I doubt it.
I think, once again, JKR was just short of handing us the answer on a silver platter. She simply chose two names, both starting with R, but nothing like "Ron." The actor playing Ron could have been called George Clooney, she'd still choose two names that were similar, yet not at all like "Ron." Ralph and Rupert. _________________

I bet she got a bit of fiendish glee from calling him Rupert though...a sort of nod. but it definitely wasn't a typo. it was intentional to show how Slughorn didn't pay him any attention. _________________

Exactly, she probably liked using the name Rupert... but no way was it a typo. _________________

I KNOW..
Most the time we would not know.. She wrote the book.. she would know.
This time was an exception because of the ongoing "joke" and what we know of Slughorn..
never mind.. _________________

I guess typo wasn't the right word This logic is more of what I was thinking. I thought it was an interesting coincidence if nothing else. |

No, not a typo, it's just a name Slughorn calls Ron, as he doesn't know Ron's name. _________________

lol. It feels very coinsedental but if you remember, Slughorn only prefers the students that he finds as his favorites, a.k.a. the slug club and all the meetings and such. But obviously Ron wasn't one of his favorites, therefore not even caring about his name. _________________

Yeh i agree with ThE_DaRk_MaRk on this one, Slughorn doesnt care what Rons name is because he sees no potential in him _________________

It was intentional on JK's part, I wouldn't call it a coincidence as much as it would be a cool fact |

I noticed that aswell but i just thought JK Rowling was letting people know that Slughorn did not make an effort to memorise students names who were not important i dont think JK Rowling would actually confuse a character she has been writing about for years with an actor. _________________ Wand: 10' Rowan with Phoenix feather core
