we all know that the photos in the wizarding world can move, and the portraits can speak and go into other photos. in fact the picture of DD on harry's chocolate frog card disappeared after he looked at it for a moment.
my question is.. does that affect the living wizard that the picture is taken.
lets say someone paints a harry potter portrait and he hangs it on his mantle... can his children contact him and get valid information from the portrait? will harry know to pick up dementor eggs from the store when ginny tells it to the portrait?
just wondering what you all think _________________

No, he wouldn't know to pick up eggs from the store. Portraits are amazing imprints of people, but they are still just imprints. _________________

nope. the imprints arent "just imprints"... sevvy used these imprints (portraits) to obtain valuable info, about the whereabouts of the trio, about dumbledore's plans... and dumbledore made use of the portraits of dily's and everard, when mr weasley was attacked.
but as for the photographs, the magic here is too simple. there's no talking to the wizard... like in poa for instance.. all james and lily do in their photo is dance while the leaves fall... all the weasleys do in their daily prophet photo is wave... all sirius black does in his "wanted" photo is scream.
in the photos, a special kind of potion makes the subjects of a picture move. but in portraits, its the imprint of one's soul.
so im guessing, yes... ginny can ask harry to buy "scream cheese" through her portrait... but she'd have to be dead first... otherwise she cant leave an imprint of herself. _________________

No matter what kind of valuable infromation a potrait can tell you, it is still just an imprint of the person. _________________

There was just a thread about this....
photos and portraits are different.... Photos capture a memory and there is a magical solvent used to make the people in the pictures move. The picture of DD on the chocolate frog card is a photograph, and would not affect the real DD.
As far as portraits go....
Portraits are an imprint of a person. They can't give mass amounts of new information as far as something they just figured out. They can observe and report back, but the person in the portrait isn't the same as the real thing and never will be.
And there is magic involved in making a portrait. You can't just paint a picture of someone and that's all.... there is more to it than that.
And we have yet to see one of those moving kinds of portraits made of a living person... so I'm guessing through reasonable deduction that in order for a wizard to have a real portrait, they have to be dead. _________________

you cant.. theyre the imprint of a soul... unless you make your protrtait a horcrux...
i think some can give information... like those of the headmasters... arguably there are those which dont do anything different, like the shrieking portrait of sirius' mom...
but those of the headmasters are sophisticated _________________

It all has to do with the magics used. The headmasters portraits seem to be very similar to the ones at the hospital. Obvious care had gone into those. But then the one of Sirius's mom... that one was probably not by the same people hired to do the more professional ones. _________________

but if a portrait is painted of the person that is still alive, does it take on the same effects as a picture until the person dies? _________________

hmm... i wonder where dumbledore's portrait came...
did someone paint it, and reserved it from the moment he died?
did it just come out as a result of his death? _________________

if its as a result of his own death, then nobody was painted it... and there is probably a spell on the headmaster position that once he dies, he has a portrait...
according to jk, snape doesnt have a portrait coz he was sacked before he died... _________________

well he fled from the castle... and the title of that chapter is "the sacking of severus snape"... so we can assume that he was sacked... or maybe he volunteered to resign, because he had no more allies... the carrows were already tied up by mcgonagall _________________

SHe said that there is no portrait of Snape, bcause he abandoned the school. I don't think that he would have a good one if he hadn't left, anyways. Those portraits probably took a lot of time to make, and Snape hasdn't been headmaster long. He also didn't have time to pose for a portrait, I'm sure. So if they had decided to put one up of Snape, it would have had to be painted from a picture of him. I don't think that a portrait made from a picture can leave the same imprint as one in which the subject posed for it.
Also, I am sure that those other headmasters were painted by professional painters. Jo says that their impressions are finely ingrained into those portraits because of the time and effort that they take. They probably just have them stored until the headmasters die.
I also think that a portrait would behave just the same if the person in theportrait were alive. I just think that any normal person would be weirded out by talking to an iprint of himself. Lockhart might, but I can't imagine that his portrait would say anything interesting. _________________

She said in another interview that Harry might try to get Snape's portrait up there, though.
Snape fled, but technically he was still helping, just no one knew it at the time. _________________
