Well.. this was a bit of a surprise to me. I mean, I kind of suspected when the 7th book talked about how they spent so much time together in their youths. But I guess this explains how Dumbledore once somewhat supported taking over the Muggles... he was doing it for Grindelwald.

But I always thought Dumbledore had a thing for Madam Pomfrey. And he never danced with a guy at the Yule Ball? Maybe JKR decided to bring him out of the cloest.. but it looks like, in the Harry Potter world, Dumbledore himself stayed in there.

It could have been a Snape-like thing. He doesn't seem to be the type to be ashamed of something that is unjustifiably looked down upon. I figure that his sexuality wasn't the secret, just the fact that the only person he ever loved was a dark wizard who caused his sister's death and who he was forced to duel. I say forced simply because he didn't seem to want to until he felt he had waited too long.

hmm.. this is actually how i imagined dumbledore... simply uninterested with girls or guys. i never imagined him to be gay.

however, since jkr said that he was gay, maybe, he fell in love with grindelwald, and afetr what had happened, he closed his heart. because the dumbledore we see in the books isnt the kind of udmbledore who'd go chasing guys. perhaps he was the quiet kind of gay guy... not the kind that chases guys. and after what had happened, he might have well shut his doors and never entertained the idea of falling in love again, with a man or a woman. the dumbledore we see in the books seems interested in neither men nor women. so thats how i perceive him.

I just thought I'd add real quick before I leave that now we know why Dumbledore's sister was messed up in the head.

She must have walked in on Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

^^ Ya that's what I meant, he shut his heart off like Snape did because his first and only love was so tragic.

hmmm... i dont think so...
coz aberforth said he was the first on the scene... maybe it was aberforth that walked in...

or arianna could have come afterwards and was shocked at what she saw and started having attacks.

I as wondering if it was a mutual relationship? Was Dumbledore's love for Grindewald a secret? Did Grindewald know and if he did, did he act on it? Was Grindewald homosexual or bisexual or heterosexual prior to his meeting of Dumbledore?

I wonder if this was another reason Aberforth and Albus were so distant from each other...

I see a bit of a parallel between Snape and DD... both had lost their true love (in different ways) and spent the rest of their lives alone shutting out love. It's really sad...

I really like this ship, I think it makes tons of sense...
It certainly expains how DD, so open-minded, came to be taken in with such a narrow-minded idea like Grindelwald's... he liked the guy who had the ideas.

I thought Madame Pomfrey, too... ever since she admierd his ear muffs in SS/PS. And I assume he didn't dance with a guy at the Yule Ball because he was in the closet.

exactly. in fact before, i was sort of wondering which of the professors could be said to be dumbledore's equal, or his favorite, or something like that: snape or mcgonagall?

its one of the most unusual ships. maybe that explains why dumbledore is very open minded and tolerant, coz its kinda strange to be so open minded and tolerant if you do not belong to at least one isolated group (dunno if i used the proper word).

hmmm... i think more like because he has already shut out love. but he danced with madame maxime, didnt he? well, maybe he just wanted to join in the fun, and stuff like that, and didnt really associate dancing with something sexual... otherwise he probably wouldnt dance, or would pick a man.

He danced with Madame Maxime, and probably a few others, as well... he probably just wanted to dance. It says throughout the series that he likes music. I think he just wanted to dance and have fun.

I don't know I thought this was kind of a weird thing to say and not mention at all throughout the series. I just kind of thought as I was reading that Dumbledore could never really fall into love because he was afraid of what would happen to them, not at all because he was gay. I don't know I just thought that whole interview was really weird. Not that I'm against gays or anything, just so you guys know, I just thought it was kind of a weird thing just to throw in there.

^ It's one of the things that made him so closed off to finding love.. again.

Also, dunno if this is anything but I was thinking back and what about the scene in the Pensieve where DD gets watery eyed when talking to Snape about his lost love, he could feel the pain.. or not. Rolling Eyes

the gay thing seemed out of the blue...but I think it was something that developed in his character...not JK saying...we need a gay character. eeny meeny miny mo. and its really not that important to the story...so I can understand why she wouldn't put it in. plus the books would have been burned a whole lot faster if she had. I think its an interesting fact that will be good to keep in mind upon rereadings...it just makes the whole grindelwald things 10 times worse for him. poor albus!

I'm in the middle of skimming parts of DH now trying to look something up... and yeah, there are some things I'm looking at differently now... I can't wait to reread Deathly Hallows again (for the 80th time) completely.
