Book 1: Fluffy is locked in a tiny room for almost 10 whole months. Also, Hagrid stuffs an owl into his coat pocket and then when he needs it he ties a letter to its leg and throws it out into the storm.
Book 2: Hedwig is forced into a cage for an entire month, where she cannot move 3 inches any direction (this one is Uncle Vernon's, though, not wizarding cruelty).
Book 3: Buckbeak is locked inside Hagrid's cabin for nearly the entire school year, with no opportunity to stretch his wings. Meanwhile, he is tried as a human adult. Flobberworms are force-fed to death for the sole purpose of the students having something to do in CoMC class.
Book 4: 4 Dragons are tethered in an enclosure and repeatedly Stunned every time they wake up and breathe fire, which is instinct for them.
Book 5: none that I can think of right now.
Book 6: Morfin regularly nails snakes to the door, although he speaks to them in Parseltongue and claims to love everything serpentine.
Book 7 (and this one takes the cake): we finally discover how exactly the dragons are kept and controlled in Gringotts. Hagrid says it is a rumor in Book 1, and here we find out they imprison a dragon with no opportunity to stretch its wings and conditioned to fear Clangers because it has been slashed across the face with hot iron rods. Hagrid seems excited about the fact that Gringotts may be keeping dragons in Book 1, but what would he have said if he knew how they were treated? Not much, I think, given the way he treats Fluffy, the pocket owl, and Buckbeak.
So why is there no wizarding humane society? Are they that behind the times?
well i think that since there are so many magical creatures in the wizarding you would have to ues force sometimes. now with the owl, i hace no idea. but with fluffy, he had a whole corridor ((sp?)) to strech in and i'm sure hagrid reguraly fed him. and buck beak was only locked inside the hut because it was christmas. the rest of the time he was chained out side. and even then that was only after the ministry instructed him to and that was at about thanksgiving time. _________________ BM #8

the gringotts treatment is cruel though, I agree. as we can see from SPEW it would probably be very hard to start a humane society among wizards. Though for all we know there is one. We don't know nobody is protesting for the gringotts dragons etc. It was just never brought to Harry's notice. _________________
1. Fluffy must of had room to move around (an entire corridor) as pottergirl pointed out. (As for Hagrid's owl, I agree that wasn't very nice treatment, and I was surprised about this when I first read it.)
2. Hedwig was Uncle Vernon's doing, and he's not really the humane type (q.v. Harry).
3. Buckbeack was only inside during the winter, and he was tried as a dangerous animal (not that they were right, but ideally if he really had been dangerous he would have needed to be tied up, right?).
4. Dragons are dangerous. They have to be kept tethered and stunned so they don't kill people, the same way Muggles don't let lions and tigers roam the streets (and dragons are much more dangerous then lions).
6. Morfin is a lunatic.
7. The dragons in Gringotts were treated by the goblins like that. Goblins are like that, as we see from Harry's experience with Griphook, and it seems no one in the Wizarding world really knew about it, except perhaps those who had vaults guarded by dragons (and I can't really see people like Bellatrix Lestrange establishing a "free the dragons" league...) _________________ "I can make things move without touching them. Fluffy should be lucky he wasn't killed, lol. And I didn't see the owl protesting. Pig himself always enjoyed delivering Ron's messages. The owls represent the pigeonspeople used to use.

Big Brown is the horse who just won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. After Preakness it was revealed he had a crack in his left front hoof, and it was stitched together with steel wire. They plan to race him at the Belmont Stakes which is scheduled for June 7, and many people are protesting that he cannot race again so soon and with a stitched-up hoof. If he re-aggravates the injury it may kill the sport entirely. I don't know much about horse racing myself but apparently he's the best 3-yr-old thoroughbred in a long time.

Cruelty to horses has been going on since horseracing began. The phrase "I have to pee like a racehorse" came from the fact that they used to prevent the racehorses from peeing so they'll feel the ugency to run faster. Also, when the racehorses got too old to race, they'd shoot them. Now, that last one isn't done as much anymore, but that peeing thing is still going strong, I actually do know that for a fact.
There is also rodeos, cockfighting, dogfighting... I mean the list goes on. Turn on Animal Plant and you can see the way some humans treat animals, it's terrible.
My point is, you seem to be very down about the way wizards treat animals... but muggles(us) aren't better.
And Hagrid's methods are done with good intentions, really. He cares about animals and would have loved to have seen Buckbeak flying free, rather than being cooped up in his home for all that time. And he wanted to keep those flobberworms alive, he just didn't know how. But he tried with his heart, and that's more than I can say for some, like those who wanted to behead Buckbeak, for instance. _________________ Breathing is optional. Look, Bella, look.

well most of the animal cruelty you mention are either creatures so deadly that could kill lots of ppl or abuse towards creature by evil characters in the books, so i dont really have a problem with it _________________
