He was a year old, I doubt he could get out of his crib by himself. _________________ "If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." - Sirius Black |

im not saying he got out of the crib....he could always see from the crib...and why are we even discussing that he was in a crib....maybe his mom was holding him....and he did see prof. quirrel die...he wasnt fainted at the time or anything....he saw prof. quirrel die....even if he didnt see his mum and dad die he still saw prof. quirrewl and it sais that in the book so he should have been able to see thestrals in his second year....since the whole quirrel thing happened in the first one.... _________________ "Together we will build and teach!" the four good friends decided and never did they dream they might someday be divided, for were their such freinds as Slytherin and Gryffindor? unless it was the second pair of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw |

Quirrel didn't even really 'die' persay, either.
And as someone I think already said, he didn't die in the book. _________________ "If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." - Sirius Black |

Harry Potter and the Sorceror's/Philosopher's Stone.
He felt Quirrell's arm wrenched from his grasp, knew all was lost, and fell into blackness, down...down...down...
"You got there? You got Hermione's owl?"
"We must have crossed in midair. No sooner had I reached London than it became clear to me that the place I should be was the one I just left. I arrived just in time to pull Quirrell off you--"
"It was you."
"I feared I might be too late."
"He left Quirrell to die; he shows just as little mercy to his followers as his enemies..."
Then. In the other books it does state that he died.
So he did die, Harry just didn't see it because he was unconcious.
He died after Harry passed out.
And it's JK Rowling's book.
I'm pretty sure that she knows what she's doing.
And that she's not making mistakes. _________________ "Think my name's funny, do you? No need to ask who you are. My father told me all the Weasleys have red hair, freckles, and more children than they can afford."

I saw somewhere on Mugglenet once that JKR had said that before you could see the thestrals, death had to 'sink in', and Harry being only a year old, couldn't really understand, or maybe even remember.
Being 14 when Cedric died, he'd remember it more vividly and it would sink in easier, because he has a better understanding of it. _________________ "If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." - Sirius Black |

For someone to see the thestrals, they would have to "get" death. Not just see it, but understand it. _________________ |

I agree with Tessa---
It's like Ella Enchanted---Ella must be given a DIRECT order to do whatever she is told.
With your particular question, the answer would be that he would have to have seen and understood death.
Oh yes! And of course, most cannot remember the years before they were three, and Harry was merely one. _________________

| Quirrell was evil so maybe you have to see someone good die. Your right about his parents he was there when they died but, he didn't actually see it he was in his crib so he couldn't see or he was just to young |

Whoever said he was in his crib?
Nobody.
As I stated before, you have to understand the death you have witnessed before you can see Thestrals. _________________ "If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." - Sirius Black |

If you read on Mugglenet under the mistakes, JK Rowling explains that the Death has to sink in?
Yes, Harry Potter probably wanders what its like to have a mother and a father and misses them greatly but he hasn't experienced the before and after effects?
He doesn't feel that great and deep empty loss that he would have felt if he had established a strong and caring relationship with his parents. No duh, he wants to know what the 'would be, could be, should be's are but its not a death feeling?
mm.. k i hope this makes sense.
But either way! Mugglenet.com -> Mistakes, everything will be settled there. _________________
