I've only seen the movies and I've had a hard time holding onto the specifics of the philosopher's stone since I don't own it. Voldemort is that little alien thing....why? His method for taking form was a spell including some of Harry's blood. What's the explanation on the necessity here? Refresh my memory on what Voldemort tried to do in the first book/movie to come back to life and why he didn't just try what he did in the Goblet of Fire the first time? The young Tom Riddle in the 2nd book/movie was just a remnant but it wasn't the present Voldemort so what purpose to that have with Voldemort's cause of comming back?
The philosopher's stone was the quickest/easiest way for Voldemort to return to his bodily form. Plus, if he could get his hands on it, he could live forever. After Book 1, Dumbledore told the creator of the stone to destroy it. Then, Voldemort had to pursue the potion in Book 4, and he was successful.. but not immortal.
In Book 2, Tom Riddle is a horcrux.. a part of Voldemort's soul. So when he took control of Ginny, if he sucked all the life out of her, he could also return in that manner. But again was unsuccessful. _________________

Spoiler:
Voldemort was immortal until all the horcruxes are destroyed. As long as there was a physical object still holding part of his soul he could never actually be killed.
I wonder what would happen when Voldemort's body got too old. I guess he'd have to find another one to use?
That's a good question. Maybe he doesn't really age, or it could be like a traditional lich where the body ages and withers away until they are basically a skeleton... Or maybe he could use someone's body to regenerate. Make another one of those potions. _________________
