They sat in silence for a moment, Lily looking at him like she hadn't before. He liked it.
"So, Sev... how horrible is it here?" She smiled slightly, but waited for an answer, moving still closer to him.
"It's better than Azkaban, I suppose..." He smiled at her, and she smiled back, and for the first time since he'd been stuck into this cell, he felt like at least one thing in his life was right - and belonged. "You know what Lily?" He felt as if now was the time, if ever. He scooted closer still, trying hard to hide his apparent blushing. She smiled at him and looked to the wall.
"What, Severus?" For once she used his full name, looking up into his black eyes, which were at the moment shining like nothing she had ever seen before. He suddenly froze, his mouth open... he couldn't speak. "Sev?" She asked, obviously concerned with his expression. He blinked, trying hard to sputter out words.
"I like you Lily... a lot."

Lily's face was blank, which scared Severus more than he had already been. She didn't say anything for a very long time, instead just sat there - the suspense was killing him! She had to say something soon, or he thought he might explode with anticipation.
"Sev... I don't know what to say." She lied, trying to spare his feelings.
"Lily, it's okay. You don't have to say anything." He got up, moving to the window and staring out of it. He didn't look at her, but he knew that she hadn't gotten up.
"It's just... James... I think I like him. I'm so sorry, Sev." She got up from the bed and put her hand on his shoulder. Immediately he shrugged it off, turning around. "Please... I'm so sorry." She moved away, and he could hear her trying not to cry.
"It's fine." He said simply, still staring out the window. He barely moved a muscle. "Just... leave. I need to be alone." He sighed, not averting his eyes from the window.
"I'm sorry..." She whispered, walking toward the door. He didn't move until he heard the door shut moments later. _________________

Lily shut the door lightly behind her, worried out of her mind. She couldn't understand why Severus had said what he did - had he really felt this way about her, all these years? And how had she not found out about it? She didn't know. All she knew was that something inside her was aching because she had hurt him, and that was painfully evident. She didn't know if things would ever be the same between them - maybe if she came to see Severus next weekend, they could talk about it.
Oh hell, it can't wait until next bloody weekend! Her mind screamed at her, and somewhere deep down, she knew that it was true. What she needed to talk to Severus about couldn't wait until next weekend, even if she had enough self-control to let it wait. She turned slowly back to the door, poising her hand to knock on the door. Just before her knuckles rapped the surface of the smooth metal, as if by a strange force, the door pulled open. It took her a few moments to notice Severus standing next to the door - his face was still just as sad as it had been when she had walked out of the room minutes before.
"Morning, Lily." He said solemnly, as if nothing had happened. She looked at him curiously... why was he acting this way? Had being stuck down here gone to his head? "Come on, you can sit down." He continued in the same monotonous tone he had spoken in before. Lily was utterly baffled, but walked over to sit on the bed anyway... he followed her. As soon as he was comfortably seated on the bed, his eyes moved to meet hers.
"Lily, I'm sorry, about everything. About springing this on you, about getting myself locked up, about trying to separate you and James. You like him, and I understand that. I'm sorry for even bothering, Lily - I should've known that you and I can't ever be what I want us to be. No matter how hard I wish, it's just not going to happen, and I need to accept that. Once again, Lily, I'm really sorry." He finished his statement lightly, in an airy tone, almost dreamily. Lily was touched by his compassion, but not quite sure what to say. She just kept staring at him... what was it about those coal-black eyes - sometimes they could show no emotion at all, and then other times, like this, they were so full of feelings that you couldn't decipher.
"Sev, I... I really don't know what to say. I appreciate it and all, but... wow." She said, stuttering so badly. Why was she like this? Normally she was the orderly one, the one who never messed up in her speech, but not now. For some reason, at this moment, there was no way that being perfect in every aspect was going to help her, and she knew that.
"You don't have to say anything. Just remember, I'm sorry. That's all you need to know." He replied to her, his voice still solemn and smooth. She didn't understand why he was so calm. A polite smile creeped onto his lips... Lily didn't know who this new guy was, but it certainly wasn't the Severus she knew to be her best friend.
Without another word, a sharp and loud knock echoed through the room. The reinforced steel on the other side of the door was being pounded, and not lightly, either.
"Visiting hours are over." Growled a rough voice from the other side of the door - whoever was on the other side meant business, and the two of them knew it as soon as they began to speak.
"Well, I suppose you better get going, then. Goodbye, Lily. I'll see you next weekend then?" He asked hopefully as Lily nodded politely, heading toward the door. She walked out, passing the man that she had seen - he looked like an auror, and a gruff one at that... definitely not someone that should be messed with. She was glad that she had left the room when she did.
Professor Shecter, who was the Gryffindor Head of House, was waiting for her when she reached the outside of the Ministry Muggle entrance. They went into a dark alleyway, almost immediately performing side-along apparition once out of side. With a flash and a gut-wrenching feeling of the air being sucked out of your lungs, they were back in Hogsmeade, a short walk from Hogwart's.
Lily was sure that many people would be asking her about Severus. How many? Who knew. All that Lily cared about was that he was safe, no matter how eventful her visit to him in the Ministry prison had been. _________________
