Well...this isn't really important or anything but its made me curious. Why couldn't Snape just leave it lying on the ground? Why did he have to make Harry dive in ice cold water? Was it one last cruelty to him or did he have a better reason?

Yes, remember in Snape's memory when DD explained to Snape that the sword would only go to Harry if it was retrieved with an act of valor. Harry had to take a risk or the sword would not have worked properly, and may not have even allowed Harry to take it.

Yup, Harry had to be brave to take it. But I was wondering why Harry didn't just use that one spell that repels water. Hermione used it on his glasses once when it was Quidditch time during a storm...couldn't he use the spell on his whole body?

It had to be an act of bravery. Whats so brave about diving into ice cold water and not even feeling the water? Smile

I know this topic is pretty old but I just have to remind people that it was not Harry who retrieved the sword, but it was Ron, who got it by saving Harry...a clear act of valor.

Good point! However, I believe that Harry would have gotten it as well. He was willing to dive in.

Both Harry and Ron were brave in that instance.

Harry jumped into the freezing water... ron jumped in after him. The question Arabella asked was why didn't they just Summon it. It's because it had to be retrieved through an act of bravery. An act both Ron and Harry were willing to perform.

True. But did they know it had to be through an act of bravery or did HArry just decide to jump into the freezing cold water?

I think it did occur to Harry when he saw the sword at the bottom of the lake. Ron only saw harry in the freezing lake being dragged down by that stupid horcrux locket.

The sword would kill a Horcrux for anyone.
It's not the sword that was doing the destroying, it was the baslisk venom that was embedded in the sword that was doing the actual destroying.

she said "that sword is impregnated with basilisk venom".

goblin silver is just really good in that it absorbs anything that will make it stronger. it absorbed the basilisk venom because the venom would make it a more powerful weapon. so goblin silver, per se, cannot destroy a horcrux. but because of its properties, it was able to absorb the venom that could destroy a horcrux.

If I remember right(I've only read is once so far), he tried to use one or two spells on the water, but they failed.

Then again he IS a Gryffindor, so he resorts to bravery quickly, moreso than logic and thinking, anyways.
