Would it have been the saddest death for you?

I kenw Dumbledore would die. It's the way of fiction the young hero's mentor dies and the hero carries on by himself.

I never cared much for Sirius so I don't think his death really effected me. i felt sad at the aftermath but not the actual death.

But Hagrid...the kind, gentle, totally lovable man who has been a major figure from the start, who has always been there with something endearing. Sure he wasn't the brightest at times but he was devoted and simply likable to an extent that I couldnt' bear it if he died.

It be like Dobby's death which was the only one to really almost make me cry.

Omg, if Hagrid had died I would have been pissed. For a moment, I thought he might have, near the beginning of the book. During the chase by Voldemort and the Death Eaters, I was scared he might have been killed.

I was like "no! take harry! anyone but Hagrid! T.T"

Not really. I'm still in mourning over my dear Fred. I love Hagrid... but I really loved Fred... Sad

NO WAY. That would be just too cruel. I think Dobby's death was enough; Hagrid's would've been terrible.

Although... hmm... Hagrid could possibly be the substitute for Hedwig as the cut-off from childhood. But an important death so early on would've ruined the book.

Harry probally would have been pushed way over the point of no return if Hagrid died. And I would have also...

That would've stunk if Hagrid died! Hagrid was awesome. Saving Harry, very risky. It was awesome.

Hagrid is one of the coolest characters in the book. Suffices to say I would have been in denial for a while.

I would go mad if Hagrid died! I got information that Hagrid would die in the last book but apparently my information was pretty screwed up. I was waiting for the moment to cry aloud but since he didn't die, I'm glad! Smile He's the cutest professor (.. is that what you call him) in Hogwarts. His pink flowery umbrella Laughing

If Hagrid died, the entire world would fall apart. It would be horrible for Harry to loose another surrogate father to him. I was worried that he died at the motercycle crash! My brothers and I were going, "Nooooooooo! Hagrid!" and when the spiders carried him off and Grawpy was calling for him! "Haggar?" Crying . I'm glad he survived though.

I agree with all above, If Hagrid had died I would have thrown the book against the wall and refused to keep reading.

I figured (gladly I was wrong about it) that Voldemort was going to kill him and then kill Harry, I was glad that instead Hagrid had to carry a living (even if he didn't know it) Harry back - he got the honor of carrying the champion!

Harry almost gave himself away to Hagrid, then the whole thing would have been up.

Why does Voldemort make Hagrid carry Harry? Is it because Hagrid was Harry's first real friend? Or because he just wanted to torment poor Hagrid?

I think people love his character so much because he's Harry's first real friend, and the one that makes Harry happiest.

Rowling had started him as a huge player in Harry's life (books 1-3 he plays alot of roles for the trio) but then JKR started to write him smaller and smaller parts, I wouldn't have been suprised if he had died - I would still have been upset - but I almost expected it.

yeah, i was convinced hagrid would die just because he had had much smaller parts in the later books, which i thought made it a real possibility for him to be killed off. not like i wanted him to die, but i was surprised that he lived through it all

I think JKR knew that there would be a huge backlash if one of the more likeable characters died (you kinda had to figure that Dumbledore would die.)

But I was upset at Hagrid's increasingly smaller and smaller role in the series.

It would have been incredibly sad and like you said about Sirious, the other deaths affected me in the aftermath but not at the moment. Hagrid it would have seemed like a completely innocent death, someone who just did everything out of his love for Harry and his desire to protect him. Even just him crying when he thought Harry was dead was heartbreaking.

When I was reading the book and he fell I thought he had died and I almost cried! I really liked Hagrid and could relate with him because of what a "gentle giant" he really was. He is a special guy.

I thought he had died twice in the book.

The first time was during the chase at the beginning. I was actually physically afraid while reading that part...my heart was racing and I had shivers. Then, Hagrid fell....and the title of the chapter was "The Fallen Warrior" and I was sure he died. And it would have been a terrible loss for Harry...His "savior," the person who had came to him and told him of the wonderful world and took him away from the Dursley's...and I thought that suffering that loss might push him further and give him a strength and greater sense of purpose for what he had to do.

The second time was towards the end of the book during the battle. I believe there was a part when Hagrid was engulfed in the giant spiders...and I thought he was dead then...that it was very fitting for him to be killed that way. And we didn't hear about him or see him again until Harry went into the forest...so the spiders must have just dragged him away.

i bet you hagrid still loved those spiders when the war was over, even after they had dragged him away and nearly killed him
