Snape was not nice. He was very mean, actually. Never in his life was he nice to anyone but Lily. And when she asked him to choose, her or evil, he chose evil. He obviously regretted that choice and tried to redeem himself. Whether or not he did, it doesn't change the fact that he was a very cruel person. _________________ Breathing is optional. I realise I'm fighting a lost battle but what the heck.
imo you don't need to show lots of affection to be nice. Snape did plenty of nice things as DD mentions like brewing Lupin's potions when he could've so easily 'accidentally' have done something wrong, giving fake veritaserum to umbridge, saving Harry's life in PS...just lots of things like that. Difference is snape didn't keep on going on about what a great guy he was. (...becuase he was!)
Come to think of it the doe thing and the way when Phineas Nigellus called Hermione a mudblood he siad don't call her that all show signs he was a lovely person. And also he gave Harry lots of detentions - not just because he had it in for James- but to stop him developing an arrogant streak like his father: 'You aren't trying to give him more detentions severus?'
'he is his father over again-'
He also prevented Harry from using an unforgivable curse in HBP: 'no unforgiveable curses for you!' or something.
As you say he might've been cuel but it wasn't his fault he was cruel for all the reasons mentioned before. I'm not saying that justifies it but it's eveidence towards the type of person he was, a good one!! He wasn't sheerly sadistic - I bet he could never do the cruciatis curse on Hary or James or Sirius, because he's a nice guy. _________________

He was never given a choice.
It's highly probable if he and Lily had gotten closer, he might have had to make the choice between Death Eater and her lover.
But as is, he was humiliated and angry and called her a mudblood. She couldn't forgive him and, as far as we know, that was the end of any relationship between the two.
So, no choice. He mada a mistake and she couldn't forgive him for it.

No, didn't you read the part in DH when she calls him her best friend? ou can't really get closer than that. They were close, friends almost their whole life. But she knew his friends were a bad influence, and he chose to remain friends with them throughout. _________________ Breathing is optional. Look, Bella, look.
She could forgive him for calling her a mudblood, but could not forgive the people he hung out with - remember James listened to her when she told him to stop making fun of Snape.
But Lily couldn't deal with the Death Eaters. _________________ The boy who lived marries the wrong girl.

ok, and what was the purpose of posting that here?
if you don't like lily fine - but explain how it has ANYTHING to do with the topic at hand, like why snape shouldn't have been interested in her, or why James shouldn't have married her, etc! _________________ The boy who lived marries the wrong girl.

But she never said "stop hanging out with them or I'll never speak to you again."
Every friend has another friend who complains about something. You don't take it as you either stop it or your friendship is over. Period.
Besides, he was more focussed on hating James. Plus just the other night he had almost been killed by Warewofl Remus and was probably extra-hating James for saving him.
As soon as she insulted James, he didn't hear anything else she said about his friends and was happy as a lark.

She didn't come right out and say, "my way or the highway" but it was pretty understood. And it wasn't like it was a tiny flaw, he was starting to hang out with a scary crowd and was getting deeper and deeper in the dark arts. He knew he had the chance of losing her as a friend but he didn't slow down. That was the choice he made. _________________ Breathing is optional. Look, Bella, look.
She gave him an unsaid choice (like GinnyX said) and Snape chose a path more befitting a Slytherine than a Gryffindor.
I wonder what would have happened if Lilly had been in the same house as Snape - would he have turned out the same way, and would James have still liked her? _________________ The boy who lived marries the wrong girl.

I think if she was in Slytherin he might not have liked her. Supposedly they got together while they were Heads... they still would have been Heads, but I wonder if he would have took notice of her if she was a SLytherin. SOme guys like brave girls, it could have been a factor. _________________ Breathing is optional. Look, Bella, look.
Oy, i didn't know that...(and if it's in DH i'm gunna feel really stupid.)
But I understand the likeing brave girls thing - but he didn't wanna let her run his life (hence why he still hung out with the Death Eater friends.)
NOTE: isn't Snape supposed to be older than Lily and James - I read somewhere that he was born in th e '50's? _________________ The boy who lived marries the wrong girl.

No.... haha, I meant James was Head Boy. Sorry, my fault, I used too many pronouns. I meant James and Lily dupposedly got together while they were Head Boy and Head Girl. I don't know if this is true or not. Supposedly JKR said this, but I haven't found a quote to back this up yet.
They were all in the same year. Snape could have been a year older, if his birthday is in the fall, like Hermione's. _________________ Breathing is optional. Look, Bella, look.
If james and lily became a couple during that time, then they may still have been able to if they were in different houses - I actually wonder why Lily (like Hermione) wasn't placed in Ravenclaw, she was easily the smartest of the lot. _________________ The boy who lived marries the wrong girl.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you! Take a few more berath of air... you ok? I'm really sorry!
I'm guessing that just because you're smart it doesn't automatically get you a ticket into Ravenclaw. i think you have to value intelligence. And perhaps they were more about bravery than smarts. I mean, there has to be more to it than just having good study habits.
Even though they were Heads, I don't think James would have like Lily because she would have been in Slytherin. Gryffindors and Slytherins didn't mix. And although he thought she might have been pretty, he wouldn't have gone for her. It's like in HBP when the Slytherins on the trains were talking about Ginny... they said she was pretty, but they wouldn't date a blood traitor. It works both way, a Gryffindor wouldn't date a Slytherin because of their bad rep.
Except for maybe Scorpius and Rose... but that's for fanfic _________________ Breathing is optional. Look, Bella, look.

ok, that's a good point - I forgot about the slytehrins talking about Ginny (I really do need to go back and read the books over.)
Oh and I found a point that got rid of my smart people go to ravenclaw, because Cho is in Ravenclaw, and she's just got no brains (by likeing Cedric more than Harry) _________________ The boy who lived marries the wrong girl.

I agree with what you have said in this post.
I feel very much for Snape, however I also feel that it was the choices he made that put in my bad books. I never actually thought of the whole Harry in detetion thing like how you put it and it does really make perfect sense.
Nikkolas, you always have a choice. _________________

Have any of you guys who say that Snape chose the dark arts over lily ever considered that Snape was just a hormonal teenager (17) and at that age one is very easily led due to peer pressure etc. and wasn't thinking clearly?
Don't you think that he spent every waking moment regretting his immaturity? Why must you keep on taunting him with his folly? Why must you be so cruel?? OH WHY OH WHY????????????????????????????????

but james for lily since imagane what snapes and lilys potter would look like
extremely good looking as a matter of fac!! He would probably give all the other male students at hogwarts inferiority complexes and try to kill themselves so in a way better Harry turned out the way he did. _________________

James was the better man by far. He never killed anyone or conspired with Voldemort to kill anyone which Snape did while he was a DE.
James married Lily because he changed into the perfect mate. Lily dumped Snape as a Friend, because he changed into the perfect dark arts, death eater.
James was athletic, good looking, trusting, and compassionate. While Snape was a wimp, ugly and loved only himself and some image of Lily he carried around in his mind.
James was a STAG animagus. Snape was a doe - er - like Lily's patronus doe - uh a little too Fem for a dude, but Snape had it. Maybe he actually had a crush on James since the doe goes with the Stag - weird stuff that.
Snape was mean, nasty and a bully his whole life then got bit by a snake which he deserved for being so evil his whole life.
James gave his life for his wife and child, very admirable.
Well anyway it is obvious that James was the better man. handsdown.

He might have been a harmonal teenager ho made a bad decision, but you would think 16 years later he'd have grown out of it. But he's still a bully. Meanwhile, James was obviously a harmonal teen, as well. Except James grew out of it. Snape still acts like a moody child. _________________ Breathing is optional. Look, Bella, look.
