Hi All,

The idea is to think of a meaning that goes with the name, just for fun. Would like to keep the official copy here.
Let me know if anyone has any contributions -thanks!

Villains:
Lord Voldemort Immortal, mort (as in to hurt, or kill)

Argus Filch
Disgusting to us; filthy

Bellatrix LeStrange Tricks; crafty. To estrange; to cut victims off from their
loved ones.

Malfoy Usually used for Draco. Malfoy, as in malformed boy; bad boy
Lucious his father is similar to vicious, dangerous

Percy Hurts (as in his family), but mercy, in the end.

Death Eater These go without saying. Demented; evil, death
Dementor

Hogwarts Teachers:
Horace Slughorn Sluggish. Horn (as in on a rhino or large beast)

Remus Lupin Lunar, as in werewolf. Remorse, sad. "Lupin" means wolf.

Severus Snape Sever us; as in, appearing to cut Harry's ties from his parents,
killing Dumbledore; Snape as in snake, sneaky

Dumbledore I'm at a loss on this one. Daring, fumble perhaps (as in when he
accidentally killed his sister). There is always a question, "Did
Dumbledore's plan fumble? Or is this according to his plan?"

Professor Flitwick Flitty, witty. Conjures image of a little, spry intelligent person
(which he is).

Minerva McGonagall Nerve; tough; gall. Will stand up to anyone.

Harry's Friends:
Hagrid Haggard, hairy. Grinning

Luna Lovegood Lunar, loony; nuts. Loves a good time (sees everything as a
fun outing)

Nevil Longbottom "Nevil" is kind of a nerdly name. Longbottom, there's more
hidden under him than meets the eye.

Hermiome ???

Ronald Weasley ???

Weasley Pleasing; the weasel meaning cunning (as in Fred and George,
dad secretly in Order of the Phoenix)

Gorp Grope; great

Fawkes Phoneix that bawks

Hogwarts Houses:
Gryfhindor
Grip, fun, dare. Grip (as in, sword)

Slytherin Slythering, snakelike, i.e. not good

Hufflepuff Makes you think of 'cup'. I've got nothing else, except that the lady the cup was stolen from was obese (huffy and puffy)

Ravenclaw The raven of course, Edgar Allen Poe, books, learning

Heh heh. I didn't check the spelling on any of them, would have been a miracle if they were all correct.
I can't quite figure out 'Hermiome', but theres' something there I'm sure. Driving me crazy.

This is just for fun- There's no real meaning behind the names/origins in this list. Just what they make you think of when you're reading the books.

Try learning to spell correctly buddy. How difficult is it to refer the books if you are unsure. Surely seeing the names over 100 times would mean you you'd be capable of spelling them correctly

Draco was an incredibly strict and sometimes creul Greek ruler, so Draco Malfoy could come from that...

Yeah, Bellatrix is Latin for "Female warrior." It's a star in the constellation Orion.

And I got this off a website about the myths of the constellations...

Quote:
Orion was in love with Merope, one of the Seven Sisters who form the Pleiades, but Merope would have nothing to do with him. Orion's tragic life ended when he stepped on Scorpius, the scorpion. The gods felt sorry for him, so they put him and his dogs in the sky as constellations. They also put all of the animals he hunted up there near him. Scorpius, however, was placed on the opposite side of the sky so Orion would never be hurt by it again.

Hufflepuff always makes me think of something cute and cuddly. The hufflepuffs are about being loyal and just. That seems to fit for me.

Nagini-Naga is a Sanskrit (ancient language in India) for snake. Nagi is the female form. Nagaina is one of the two King Cobras (her mate is Nag) in Rudyard Kipling's Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (My favorite short story apart from The Pagemaster), which is a feminme form of Nag, which is Hindi for cobra. Nagini must have been inspired by Nagi and Nagaina.
OH! We were talking about the story of Orion. The woman he fell in love with was Merope, which was the name of Tom Riddle's mother!

its a simple game it is. Pardon'n yer honours of high station, me bein' a lowly Mubble and all......
