The ring was (in the sixth book) marvolo gaunts and likely in his family for centuries so he must be related to one of the peverell brothers... and harry was related to ignotus..so they are distantly related! am i correct?
I don't think that Harry and Voldemort were related.....they just seemed alike because they both became orphans, they both rather be at Hogwarts then anywhere else, and when Voldemort tried to kill Harry as a baby he put some of his magic power into Harry.
Where in the book does it say that Harry was related to Ignotus? _________________ PROUD HP FAN AND MEMBER OF THE OOTP!

When he is talking to dumbledore in the purgatory king's cross. They are very distantly related if they are both related to one of the perevell brothers. Bottom of 714 in the US version. _________________

even though they have ancestors who were brothers, time has diluted that relationship into obscurity. I would in no way consider them related. _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
I think that "of common ancestry" is a better descriptor of their blood relationship than "related." "Related" implies a fairly recent sharing of blood, which they don't have -- "of common ancestry" simply shows that somewhere back in the mists of time, they share an ancestor. _________________

Well put but in the same way harry and ron probably share a common ancestor _________________ 'Valhalla Awaits'
Every pure blood family is "of common ancestry". They wouldn't be pure bloods if they weren't. _________________ I am not worried Harry.. I am with you.
yes they are related. if voldemort is related to the second peverell brother and harry is related to the third, then yes they are related, albeit distantly...

But wait... maybe I just don't get this because I don't have the book in front of me but...
does it say explicitly anywhere that Slytherin is descended from one of the other brothers not the one with the cloak that Harry was from? (I honestly thought Slytherin was above them as in their great grand father or something like that)
If it does... then how does simply having the family crest on the ring make Gaunt so sure he was descended from Slytherin? Couldn't he just as well have been a son of another Peverell such as Ignotus in which case he would *not* be a descendant of Slytherin. Doesn't that imply that Slytherin has to be *older* than the Peverell brothers for the the entire family crest to be representative of Slytherin decent?
I just really am trying to figure out to what degree Harry and Voldy are related... thankee

Shouldn't this entire thread have a spoiler warning?
Spoiler:
Well, after I read that part when Harry and Dumbledore we talking and DD basically said Harry was related to the 3rd brother, I was waiting for Harry to ask "Am I related to Voldemort, then?" or something along those lines. But, nothing like that was ever stated, so I'm guessing JKR wanted to get across that instead of being "related" they had a common ancestor way back along their family tree.
I'm guessing Slytherin had a daughter who married a Peverell, perhaps the three brothers were the grandchildren of Salazar, because their story seems pretty old in itself _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
