I thought he was paying attention. Let me get my book...it says no where that he wasn't paying attention. in fact he was listening and "harry and ron exchanged looks with raised eyebrows" page 137.

Well you cant be paying attention to Snape if you're looking at Ron he also came to class unprepared Snape asked him how many questions that he didnt know the answer to and then Harry told Snape which student he should be calling on in his own class room...not really the way to get in his good graces.

they looked at each other after he finished his speech, the looks were in response to it. Anyway...I wouldn't have known to read the books before I came. I have never been in a class where that was expected of the students. Anyone besides Hermione would have been unprepared to answer. But Snape knew he could use it to humiliate Harry, making snide comments instead of simply correcting him.

Harry was warned before they even went to Snape's class that he was a hard teacher and favored his students...knowing that I would have probably picked up a book and at least flipped through it before I went to school expecially since he had his books long before the start of the term. I guess I would just have been more like Hermione you give me my class text before the start of term I would have made sure to study it even said Harry read the books late into the night before school...I guess he just doesnt retain information very well

Yeah and flipping through would ensure he would know the answer to the question Snape was going to ask. and I know for myself, that quite often I have to go over things three times for them to be good and stuck in my head. Once reading, once in class and once studying. I really don't think Harry did anything wrong in that first class except for being a little snippy---but only after Snape started it. He shouldn't expect students to come to his classing knowing everything anyway. He's not there to simply drill them on what the book said. He is supposed to teach them. Personal attacks can do nothing to help the learning process, but actually hurt it.

I must say though there were moments where Snape was clearly right for punishing Harry, or even stood up for him or saved him. But the vast majority of the time he was just out to torment him and his friends and many other students. This is not good teaching.

oops...just noticed that my comp ended up double posting when I tried to edit my comment.

Snape wasn't a nice teacher but he was an effective one the students probably had to try harder in his class then in any other because he set his standards so high. And Really what did Snape say to Harry the first time except that fame wasnt everything...he was just letting Harry know that he wasn't as impressed with him as everyone else in the wizarding world seemed to be.

there is a difference between being "beneficially tough" and being cruel. Snape crosses that line.

i dont think that snape was ever cruel to students, he never harmed any student in any way. he was bitter towards harry because he saw james all made over again, and blamed james for probably coming between him and lily.

He didn't harm them, but he did abuse them verbally a bit. (Though I think I remember him threatening to poison them as a test in the one book Laughing) However, every student there knew the guy was bitter and condescending and favored his own house. In their position I don't think I'd have gotten genuinely upset at being singled out and insulted by him, knowing that he did it to everyone.[/i]

No he never hurt them, but he was verbally and emotionally abusive. Such as when he endangered Neville's toad. And then when he purposefully knocked over Harry's potion vile and failed him. Even if it was an accident Harry should have been able to make it up. That's not professional.

It's just tough love lol. He said he would poison the students on one of his test so they would work harder on the antidote...he never actually got around to poisoning them.

Completely true

I don't think teaching was his calling

I wonder what he would have been if he hadn't stayed at hogwarts. beyond a death eater I mean. He'd need income.

With his knowledge of potions he probably could have been an apothecary or worked in the wizard medical field somehow.

I always wondered that too expecially after HBP all those aditions he made to his book he could have definatly improved the potions text at the very least

He'd be Dr. House with long hair and a cloak Laughing

I could see him writing potions books, and probably dark arts/defense books as well. He also strikes me as someone who'd be better in a research oriented position where he only had to deal with other researchers.

I am a HUGE Snape fan.

Seriously, huge.

I've gone through so many extremes with him throughout the series...one chapter I love him, the next I loathe him.

After DH, I officially love him. Very Happy
Everything about him...his appearance, mannerisms, demeanor, is just awesome.

I mean, he can be a real pain in the arse as a teacher and all, and he's not the most professional, but I still have a massive amount of respect for him for some reason.

I don't really know...I'm just really likin' Snape. XD
