He has oily skin too, per some of his descriptions. I think he just naturally has an oil problem. In that case, there probably isn't a lot he can do about it. Oil just keeps coming back.
Sometimes I think Snape's 'meanness' might be a complete lack of a social filter. I've thought some pretty mean things about people, but I can usually stop them before they come out of my mouth. _________________ I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. His greasy hair. I think it might have been because his family was poor when he was little. And growing up he couldn`t start washing hair. It was just too weird for him. Or he punished himself that way. _________________

And not to be sexist, but he's a guy I solve my oily skin problem by carrying a little packet of Neutrogena blotting sheets in my purse - guys usually aren't into doing that kind of thing.
I've also taken into account that the story is mostly from Harry's point of view. Harry doesn't like Snape as a person so he's probably going to exaggerate bad physical qualities.
Snape seems fairly meticulous in other respects (I imagine he'd have to be to be so good with potions). I doubt he was a slovenly man, but he definitely wouldn't strike me as the type to do routine mirror checks all day to make sure his hair was in perfect place and his skin shine free. _________________ I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. naaah harry isnt superficial either, he wouldnt care how snape looked either way and dont confuse being all concerned with your looks, like some guys nowadays do, with taking proper care of yourself that is what everyone does, like say taking a BATH
jo made it very obvious that snape was really both ugly and didnt even bother to look ok so its all his doing _________________

He wouldn't care how he looked, but a teenage boy isn't going to give a glowing description of someone he doesn't like. You don't have to be superficial to notice that someone's hair is a bit on the lank side.
I don't think he completely doesn't take care of himself, I just don't think he'd do anything beyond the basics. Oily skin, even when you wash it in the morning, is oily again a few hours later. And if you've got long thin hair, the bits around your face, especially if you brush them out of the way a lot, pick up oil through the day. She's never described him as 'dirty,' so I don't think he was without hygiene at all. I'd guess the guy just didn't do anything beyond a daily bath. (I honestly don't think he sounds 'ugly' per se. But then again, for whatever reason, I tend to be attracted to guys with "Snape-like" features) _________________ I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. Oh, I was thinking his hair probably wasn't really 'unwashed' as much as just greasy from the rest of him. When I was younger I shampooed my hair every day but it still looked pretty horrific some days. Partly from my skin and mostly because it took and act of God to make me pick up a brush (I was kind of anti-upkeep many years ago ) He strikes me as the kind of guy who would cut his own hair.
Yellow teeth - maybe he drinks a lot of tea and coffee, haha. At least they weren't rotten or partly missing. Someone should have bought him a whitening toothpaste.
As someone else pointed out, he probably wasn't taken care of well/encouraged to take care of himself growing up and never got in the habit. I don't think he was well groomed, I just doubt he was foul-smelling and covered in a layer of grime simply because he had a decent, professional job and you usually don't achieve that if it looks like you don't know what a bath is, haha.
Something else I've seen brought up somewhere - the birthday that Rowling gives for Snape makes him a Capricorn and he fits it rather well. Does anyone know if Rowling planned any characters birth dates to specifically fit a sign? _________________ I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I agree. Especially since it wasn't just Harry that thought these things about Snape's pysical appearance. The marauder's certainly didnt' think highly of his, making references to leaving grease on his test paper. And Fred suggests that Snape runs away fast from shampoo. _________________ ^made by Fiendfyre
About Snape, I liked the way he handles Umbridge. The part when Umbridge asked Snape for more 'Truth Potion' [I do not know how to spell out the V word. =/], he simply told Umbridge that she took up all the potion. And that left her hanging.
Me personally, I've always believed that Snape is the good guy and I always had to fight my thought of changing my thoughts of Snape in book 6.

lol well i wouldnt take those opinions seriously, because out of all those i think harry is the one most bound to actually say the truth and not just try to use lame insults on snape, i mean, it could be not that true and both the twins and the marauders would use those insults merely because he's snape, am i not right?
but i was rather judging by the fact that jo herself (who likes snape) said that snape didnt take proper care of himself as he should _________________

i think Snape was bad because of the way he was brought up, and therefor, was kind of well evil. However, meeting Lilly did change him but when they stopped being friends, he turned evil again.
In conclusion, i think Snape is kind of evil but he's not 100% bad because he did truly love Lilly.

Die another day perhaps. He tried to be on Dumbly's side..; but everyone had known that he was on Voldy's side. Eventually in the 7th book "The Prince's Tale" reveals that he was inlove with Lily Evans and he tried to protect Harry. _________________
Snape is my all time favorite character!! He's amazing...I love how he played double agent throughout the whole series. And due to the fact how cruel he acted to Harry and Ron, I thought that was funny. But what really made me like Snape ALOT more was that chapter near the end of Deathly Hallows, called The Prince's Tale. That is my favorite chapter in the whole series. That I have to say is the chapter that made me the most emotional while reading the book. The stuff that they show in there....I like to go back and just read that chapter sometimes. My emotional train was OUT OF CONTROL!!!! Snape loving Lily, going crazy in front of Dumbledore....and just the fact it showed more into Snape's past....truly epic.
Snape is evil, I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. He favors his own house, and is snobby and rude with others. But we get a biased tale, as the whole series is from Harry's view, and snape's resentment and loath toward James, he could not stand Harry, and loathed and resented him just the same. Only he still loved Lily, his only love in his life besides his own greed, and reluctantly protected Harry. Snape never liked Harry, but protected him all the same. We know Snape is "good" towards the end of DH, in the Princes Tale chapter, but I do believe that it was mostly because he is trying to save his own neck. And Snape is one of THE GREATEST wizards ever, up there with Dumbledore and Voldemort. To be able to conceal his loyalty from the Dark Lord for that long....wow. _________________
^ yes, I agree. He had some serious skills! He is probably the occlumens the world has ever known. _________________

I alaways loved Snape he was a very complex and flawed human being. It made him a bit eaiser to relate to at times.
Spoiler:
I believe Snape's death was the most heartbreaking of all, because really no one in the book every really trusted or appreciated the things that Snape did to help them in the fight against Voldemort. He was seen as a traitor and a murder untill the very end. That always made me sad.
And I know most people always say Snape was always mean and sarcastic but I definatly enjoyed his attitude. His snarky and calculated look on things was always a nice change of pace once he got older he seemed to be very in controll of himself and his emotions which kept him from makeing some of the rash mistakes some other characters made.

...yes he was so in control of his emotions that he wasn't unduly crude to a student and his friends, just because he looked so much like his father. _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
Well you have to remember that Harry was a constant reminder that the love of his life chose another man over himself. Besides as a death eater he couldn't exactly be opely nice to Harry...not that he would have any ways...but he did keep the kid from dieing _________________ "I have a code of conduct..victory at all cost" -Starscream

True true Severus was very brave and very talented and very sad and I love him as a character but as a person I despise him. Sure he couldn't have been openly nice, but he didn't have to be so nasty to him, for no fault of his own. _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
